With school starting after Labour Day we are gearing up for the start of our athletic year with football and varsity volleyball starting this week.

Cowboys Football practices start on Monday, August 29. Registration will take place from 5:00-6:00 pm followed by practice from 6:00-8:00 pm. Practices will continue Tuesday through Thursday from 6-8 pm each night. The team will be gearing up for its first game at Springbank on Friday, September 9 at 5:30. All students in grades 10-12 that will be attending CHS this year are eligible to come out for football as well as all students in Grade 9 from Indus, Chestermere Middle and Langdon Schools. For full information package on football season check the athletics’ web-site. Please note that experience is not necessary to play football. We encourage all interested students to come out and play the great game of football. E-mail me if you require any more information or check the web-site for information packages and

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
It was true pleasure to watch, today, as installation of our athletic field lights began. Installation will continue this week and next. This has been an arduous process and has been ten years in the making. We are very excited about this and thank all those that have helped make this a reality. We look forward to our first home game under the lights on Friday, September 16 against Bow Valley.

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL TRYOUTS
Varsity Volleyball tryouts, this year, will start prior to the beginning of school. Both the girls and boys will practice on Monday, August 29 and Thursday, September 1 from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Wilson Gym. The coaches will distribute more information at the first practice.

FALL SPORTS TRYOUTS
Tryout schedules for JV Volleyball, Girls’ Soccer, Golf and Cross Country will be announced on the first day of school, Tuesday, September 6. They will also be posted on the web-site.

COWBOYS ALUMNI
In Sunday’s Calgary Sun there was a picture of the Calgary Wolfpack Sr. Men’s Football team celebrating their 38-14 victory over Grande Prairie in the Provincial Championship. In the picture I noticed two Cowboys’ alumni players, Nick DeBortoli and James Balsdon. Both these young men were key components of the Cowboys when they played. Congratulations to them both. It is nice to see players continue to play the game they love.

IDAHO JOURNEY
Long time Chestermere coach, Howie Leong , and I just returned yesterday from a five day trip to Idaho. While there we were able to see football practices, a varsity Girl’s Volleyball Jamboree, a grade 9 football game and two varsity football games under the lights. It is always an interesting experience to see how the Americans do things in their schools and athletic programs. Their athletic culture is certainly different than our own. Hopefully we both learned a few things to help us as coaches.

GRADE NINE ATHLETICS

Grade nines that will be attending Langdon, Chestermere Middle and Indus Schools this fall are eligible to participate in team sports at Chestermere High School. To receive an information flyer on the opportunities available please e-mail me or check our web-site.
