On Line Safety Seminar

Your Childs Safety On The Internet

CHESTERMERE – An Online Safety and Cyber Awareness seminar is being held on October 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at Chestermere Lake Middle School. The 2 hour seminar is open to all residents in the in the area including Langdon, Indus and Chestermere.
When Bev LaPeare isn’t climbing mountains (remember Kilimanjaro) she is hard at work as the Ward 2 Trustee for Rocky View Schools. LaPeare uses a computer in her work day as many of us do also. Programs like Word or spreadsheets are all too common to adults and students of all ages. Other social media programs like Facebook are used daily by young and old; this is the technology present today. The internet is a wonderful resource for obtaining any information the world has to offer.
Young children can type in a word and have access to the topic of their choice at any time of the day. Are children safe doing that? As a child you played at the playground and you knew what activities could hurt you, but can you say the same for the safety of your kids using the internet? LaPeare saw a learning experience not just for students at the schools, but also for the adults of the children. She assembled some of the best technology personnel currently working around her and has arranged a Technology Presentation for the evening. This informative session could be the best two hours you have spent learning perhaps what your kids already know.
The seminar is in 3 parts – the first session will be relevant to everyone as it is a talk from a Calgary Constable about Online Safety and Cyber Awareness, the second is an overview of “tools of the culture” which is directed more towards understanding Rocky View Schools technology and tools, and the 3rd part is a series of short sessions about things like Moodles, Google Docs, etc.
Part One – 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM
The first hour will be a large group presentation by Constable Kathy Macdonald, Cyber Awareness Coordinator, of the Calgary Police Service who will present and discuss her topic.
Part Two – 7:30 PM – 7:45 PM
A brief overview of the Tips Navigating RVS “Tools of the Culture” and help deciphering Rocky View technology terminology and a review of how students log in.
Part Three – 7:45 PM – 8:30 PM
Rocky View Schools Learning Specialists will host a carousel of “Technology Tips” sessions. These short sessions will be a mixture of hands on, presentation and discussion. Possible session topics might be; Google Docs 101, Moodle – What is it?, MindMeister – Lets make a Map!, Podcasting for Beginners, Wikis and Blogs
