Chestermere & Calgary agree to consult on shared border

Calgary’s Intergovernmental committee has recommended that Calgary’s Council adopt a circulation protocol between our municipalities. This will be coming to Chestermere’s Council for review and adoption following the City of Calgary Council’s adoption.
Recent annexations by both municipalities has resulted in a 5 kilometer long border between the city of Calgary and the town of Chestermere.
“This is a great example of how neighbours should be working together. Our staff and members of Council from both communities have been hard at work planning this document in anticipation of it coming to each Council for decision”, says Mayor Patricia Matthews.
The proposed protocol is essentially an agreement between our municipalities to share plans for development along the mutual border in a timely fashion. This will allow the town of Chestermere to provide comments and input on how neighbouring developments may impact each other.
The town of Chestermere believes a formal protocol will be a proactive step to ensure that development along the borders will be done in a way that makes sense while respecting individual autonomy. Having this protocol in place should assist our municipalities in avoiding major interface planning issues and will work as a mechanism for resolving any disputes.
Should it be adopted by both Councils, it will be a formal piece of the continued collaboration with the City of Calgary. Regular meetings with the City of Calgary and the town of Chestermere have been occurring to discuss joint planning and development issues and a formal protocol is something that has been worked on for some time.
A City of Calgary council committee approved this agreement on Thursday morning and will be discussed at an upcoming full council meeting. If the agreement gets final approval it will then be debated by Chestermere’s town council.
