Theft from Motor Vehicles – Arrests Made – Chestermere RCMP Detachment

At approximately 0315 hours on June 5, 2014 Chestermere RCMP were alerted to a pair of suspicious males in the West Creek area of Chestermere. Subsequently, a suspect vehicle was located and two males fled on foot. Responding officers located the males hiding under a deck at the rear of the residence. Both were arrested, and found to be in possession of drugs and stolen property.

Further investigation revealed the suspect vehicle had been stolen out of Calgary, where both males were residents. The suspects have been charged under the Criminal Code and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Both have been released on a Promise to Appear with conditions. They are scheduled to appear in Strathmore Provincial Court on August 19, 2014.

Additional charges are pending and the matter is still under investigation.

Unrelated to this incident, on May 16, 2014 at about 0005 hours, Chestermere RCMP located and arrested an intoxicated local resident who had been checking unlocked vehicles and stealing their contents. Three Criminal Code charges were laid, and the male is scheduled to appear in Strathmore Provincial Court on July 15, 2014.

In another unrelated incident, on April 14, 2014 at about 0200 hours, Chestermere RCMP were dispatched to a report of suspicious persons checking vehicles in the West Creek area. Police attended to the area immediately. Stolen property was recovered and three males were arrested. Charges were laid in relation to this matter under the Criminal Code for possession of stolen property as well as the Chestermere Municipal Bylaws. The three males were residents of Calgary.

Chestermere RCMP are reminding the public to remove all valuables, all vehicle keys, and all electronic devices from their vehicles.  This includes loose change and garage door openers. Doors of the vehicles need to be locked. In virtually all cases, the targeted vehicles were unlocked with the items noted left inside. Chestermere will continue to be targeted by criminals as long as the opportunities keep being presented to them.
