Despite the recent flooding of both Langdon and Chestermere, organizers of the always popular Langdon Day decided it was business as usual for the big event. Although, earlier in the spring, it was feared the event would be canceled due to lack of vendors and volunteers, the community came together and the event went on as planned.
The Hamlet of Langdon, which now has a population of almost 5000 residents, is tucked away 4 kilometers East of Calgary on highway 560 (Glenmore Trail) and highway 797. Langdon is a fast growing community with schools, businesses and residents all wanting that small town feel. In 1912, Langdon hosted its first agricultural fair on park grounds donated by the Canadian Pacific Railway. This fair consisted of horse racing, rodeo, a stock show, baseball tournaments, and a horseshoe tournament. For the ladies there were handicraft exhibitions, and baking and preserving competitions. The annual Langdon Days, which is a three day event held every July, has continued on with the community tradition since its inauguration in 1945. Today’s version of this event consists of a variety of fun activities for everyone. The Langdon Community Association, along with many corporate sponsors, and volunteer organizations/ individuals host a parade, slo-pitch tournament, children’s festival, a vendor’s village, silent auction, car show and shine, and an evening of live music.
On July 17 – 19th, 2015, Langdon transformed into a carnival type environment, with activities and events for all ages. The festivities kicked off on Friday with a slo-pitch tournament and the opening of the beer gardens where event go-ers rocked the night away with DJ Bryce Ulrich and live music by Cliffhanger. The slo-pitch tournament started up again bright and early Saturday morning with Langdon Dental sponsoring a pancake breakfast up until 10am when the always popular parade started. Beautiful floats, gorgeous horses and awesome community members made their way through the Langdon streets, tossing treats to the awaiting crowds. With the hot sun beaming down, some of the parade entries that sprayed the crowd was much appreciated. With the Langdon Fire Department wrapping it up, the parade always thrills young and old.
The rest of the day went on with the slo-pitch tournament, the Langdon Community Association Free Family Zone that was generously sponsored by Qualico Communities which had face painters, bouncing castles, balloon animals and much more. Synergy hosted an afternoon of fun youth activities while vendors of all types had a market set up selling their goods to those that attended. A skateboard competition was also a big draw for all of those skateboard enthusiasts.
There was definitely no shortage of yummy food as Family Fry Guy, Kwality Ice Cream Inc, Il Forno Vagabondo all on scene to feed the large crowd.
The beer gardens were back opened with music being supplied by DJ Mark Oderkirk and live music by High Steppin’ Daddy. This annual event wouldn’t be complete without the spectacular fireworks display which again this year, did not disappoint.
The final day brought on the wrap up of the slo-pitch tournament, a morning church service and a car show and shine at Langdon Crossing. No matter whether you came for one day or attended the whole weekend, Langdon Days proved once again to be very popular with the community and surrounding area.
The Langdon Community Association is a 100% volunteer based organization run by members of the community, with the sole purpose of helping to make Langdon a more enjoyable place to live. Events like this help to build relationships and friendships within the community and is also a great opportunity to showcase this awesome town.
