History Repeats Itself

I wrote a story for the Chestermere history book ‘Chestermere a Home for All Seasons’ (page 196) about the 1954 close call of a jail being located in Chestermere. The 2016 petition asking the Minister of Municipal Affairs to conduct an inquiry into the conduct of Chestermere City Council signed by 5400 residents (The Anchor March 31 2016 p 6) reminded me that as in 1954 Chestermere citizens still stand up to their government when they believe it is necessary. In 1954 it was to prevent the jail being located at the north end of Chestermere Lake between Paradise Road and the Trans Canada. Today it is for different reasons –but still the same idea; “a story of residents pulling together to guard their dreams for their community.”
