The Chestermere Regional Community Association (CRCA) is hoping to get people out to play golf in support of the recreation centre this October.
The CRCA is partnering with Lakeside Golf Club to hold the inaugural 18 Holes of FUNDraiser golf tournament Oct. 4.
“We’ve always had a great relationship with Chestermere Recreational Centre,” said Lakeside Golf Club President and Owner Wayne McBean.
McBean, a former NHL player, thinks that facilities like the recreation centre are very important to cities the size of Chestermere.
“I would hate to see a facility like this go downhill if they don’t have the funding because I think hockey is a very important part of every small community in Alberta,” he said,
“We need to support our small town recreation centres.”
He and his partner Glenn Carr are giving the use of the golf course at 50 per cent off, something they have only done for one other fundraiser this year.
It will see up to 36 teams of 4 players competing and raising funds to support the purchase of a new Olympia ice resurfacing machine.
In addition to hockey, the centre also supports figuring skating, ringette, public skating, curling and other athletic endeavors.
“We’re not just a facility that is just supporting hockey, although that is our largest ice user,” said CRCA General Manager Jody Nouwen.
As a non-profit organization, the CRCA is constantly fundraising to improve the facility and purchase new equipment.
“We’re looking at creative and fun fundraisers that is going to get the community involved and support us,” said CRCA Marketing and Sales Coordinator Tori Schneider.
There will be cash prizes for the top three teams. As well as a steak buffet dinner and raffle prizes after the tournament.
“We ask the community to register as an entire team…$500 per team,” said Schneider.
The tournament will be played in a shotgun format.
“We’ll get everybody out on the green at the same time and start it off, it’ll be a scramble game,” she said.
In addition to the players, they are looking for hole sponsors and a major sponsor.
The deadline for team registrations is Sept. 20. To register a team, call 403-272-7170 or in person.
Sponsorship opportunities are available at marketing@chestermerecrca.com.
