Seven Ways to Celebrate Neighbour Day on April 30th

Preston-columnHeader

Neighbour Day in Calgary is the third Saturday in June and you’re encouraged to celebrate along with our big city neighbours this summer. However with the weather being this good, why not celebrate International Neighbour Day a little earlier on April 30th? Small groups of people around the world are gathering together for block parties, back-yard BBQs, or gardening projects. If you are looking for ways to celebrate Neighbour Day this year, here is your Neighbour Day quick guide to help you make the most of it.

1. Host a pop-up party in your neighbourhood. The sky is the limit, but you might want to bring food, games, music, kids activities, lawn chairs, and a sense of adventure. Last summer Lake Ridge Community Church hosted several random pop-up parties in parks around the city and neighbours had a chance to meet each other and enjoy a moment of fun in the sun. Block party kits are available every year from the City of Chestermere, give them a call for more information.
2. Organize a community clean up. Not glamorous, but it might be needed, and could be a lot of fun. Where are those places that need a little extra care?
3. Walk your neighbourhood. Is there a street or a park that you havn’t visited in awhile? Have you ever walked the paths at the south of Lake Chestermere, or to the North? Getting to know your neighbourhood is a great way to celebrate Neighbour Day.
4. Geocaching is a fun way to have an suburban adventure. Gather a few friends and find some local geocaches, or start one yourself. Learn more about the world’s largest treasure hunt at geocaching.com
5. Host a yard sale. No better way to get to know your neighbours than by selling your old VHS player to them for a dollar.
6. Plan an act of kindness for your neighbourhood. Bake some goodies and put them on your neighbour’s step with a nice note. This is one time when ringing your neighbour’s door and dashing away is a good idea, but sticking around to say ‘hi’ is even better.
7. Let your neighbours know that you’re having an ‘Open Deck Party.’ Set a time and let your neighbours know that they’re welcome to come and hang out on the patio. Whether it’s a BBQ, drinks, or a bonfire, an ‘Open Deck’ party is a fun way of opening your space to others.

However you celebrate Neighbour Day this year, remember that this little holiday is all about getting real face-time with those who live on your street. Who knows, you may meet your new favourite people. #letsneighbour
