The city has been forced to cancel Chestermere Arts Days for 2017 after failing to receive the provincial grant that has funded the event in the past.
“Earlier this year, we received word that we did not receive the provincial grant that has usually covered the costs of this event,” said City of Chestermere Events Coordinator Nancie Huneault.
Although alternate funding was sought, nothing has been secured leading to the decision to cancel the event that had been scheduled for the end of the month.
“We were hoping that other funding would come through but unfortunately we have not been able to secure what we needed to make it happen this year,” she said.
Chestermere Arts Days was started in 2011 with the support of the artistic community in the city.
Over the years the Arts Days Committee has included representatives from the city, the Chestermere Agricultural Society, Community Services, local artists, and the Chestermere Public Library.
Arts days celebrated the diversity and arts found in Chestermere with a variety of events and workshops including art shows, music, poetry, dance, other visual displays and an art walk.
While this year’s event has been cancelled, Huneault hopes to find the funding to bring back Arts Days next year.
“We will certainly revisit this event next year and we hope we can find the necessary funding to bring this event back to our community” she said.
