Chestermere fire department called to canal spill

Chestermere Lake is safe and sound after local fire personnel were called to contain a potential spill on the irrigation canal Friday morning.

Chief Brian Pomrenke said crews were called around 7:30 am to put a boom on the Township Road 240 inlet following reports of a potentially toxic spill upstream on the Bow River in Calgary.

The move came after Calgary fire crews placed their own booms over the Harvie Passaage after witnesses reported a sheen on the river caused by an unknown oily petroleum based substance.

“It was a precautionary measure on our part,” said Pomeranke. “Nothing of consequence went into our lake and there was no threat to our lake.”

Pomeranke said Alberta Environment is investigating to identify the source and cause of the spill. In addition, the Western Irrigation District continues to monitor Chestermere Lake.
