The 2012-2013 athletic year will be over in the next few weeks. This week our rugby and soccer teams will participate in playoffs, while 9 of our track athletes are preparing for zones on May 28th. My apologies to Ria and Alec as I could not access their pictures due to the long weekend. I will include their pictures in next week’s article. BOYS’ RUGBY A hard fought battle between friendly arch rivals left Chestermere on the losing side, this past week. The score remained 10-7 for Strathmore for more than 2/3rds of the game. It was a tough match for both teams as they met head-on. Chestermere’s only try was scored by Wade Zimmerman, and converted by Cole Templeton, for a final score of 15-7. Strathmore scored in the final minutes to secure the win. Another difficult game will be played at home next week against Division 1 team Foothills Composite High School. BADMINTON ZONE RESULTS Congratulations to the badminton team on an excellent performance at zones in Cochrane this weekend. Paul Hui and Danny Pham played well in their round robin pool but, unfortunately, came up short in making it to play-offs. Akshay Aheer played well and finished second in his pool making it to the semi-finals. After a hard fought game Akshay came up short in making it to the finals but did end up taking home the bronze medal. Congratulations to all of the boys. Welcome back, after two weeks of not writing a column. As I write this I am looking out my classroom window and wonder if spring will ever arrive. Our spring teams are anxious to get started with their season and we all look forward to nicer weather. History was made, this past weekend, as our boys swept all three singles events at the Divisional Championships. Our basketball season is officially over now that the league banquet and all-star games are done. We have our Easter break, this week and badminton, rugby and boys’ soccer will swing into full gear when school resumes next week. ROCKY VIEW LEAGUE AWARDS BANQUET On Monday, March 25 the Rocky View league Awards Banquet was held at Bert Church High School. Close to 500 people attended this event, with 95 coming from Chestermere. A number of our athletes were honoured with awards. Our Senior Varsity teams finished their seasons off with strong results. The boys earned a bronze medal and the girls the consolation championships at the 3A Provincial Championships in Strathmore, this past weekend. This brings an end to the basketball season with the spring sport season just around the corner. VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL The Lakers travelled to Spruce Grove this past week as the #2 seed in the 3A Provincial Championships. What an incredible weekend for our basketball teams. We won two zone banners, finished second in another and both senior teams qualified for provincials. We had mixed results at last week’s Divisional Championships in Airdrie. Congratulations to the JV Boys who won the league title. All four basketball teams travel to their respective zone championships, this weekend. JV BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Chestermere JV Lakers are the 2013 Rocky View Divisional Champions. The Lakers played the Springbank Phoenix in the semi- final game with a berth into Saturdays championship game on the line. The Lakers started out strong getting an early jump on the Phoenix, however slowing down throughout the game. Our students are off school for the entire week, but still have their final league basketball games. On Tuesday the girls host Bert Church and on Wednesday the boys travel to Airdrie to play the Chargers. After that most teams have some time off and will rest to be healthy for the playoffs. CURLING From Coach Sutcliffe: “We can be very proud of our curling athletes and their representation of our school at the South Central Zones Bonspiel. Congratulations to: Clayton Baxter, Dallas Brocklesby, Kaden Clouston, Kevin Wolff, Jessica Frebrowski, Judy Tran, Aleisha Hall, and Leane Haasen. The girls played hard and strong in the round robin.
