Sump pumps protect from flooding

Sump pumps protect my basement from flooding. The best way to get rid of that excess ground water is into my floor drain, right? After all, the floor drain does make sure that all the water is taken away. Wrong! Putting the sump pump directly to the floor drain could actually cause your basement to flood. Floor drains, often in your laundry room or furnace room, are connected to the sanitary sewer system: the same system as your sinks, showers and toilets. This system collects all of the wastewater and pumps it all the way back to Calgary for treatment. [...]

Good sports at hockey tournament

Dear Editor, As a hockey mother of three boys, it is not often that my fellow hockey moms and I leave a game in which we have lost, with warm feelings and admiration for the team that just beat our kids. This, however, was the case on Easter Sunday, at the Tournament of Champions in Innisfail. Our Novice Aged boys and girls (aged 7 &8) were losing their third and final game of the tournament, and playing against a Chestermere Novice team. Needless to say, they were all a little tired of losing, and were playing their little hearts out. [...]

St. Gabriel High School Sports Basketball Season Around the Corner

Round Up It was a relatively quiet week in league play for all four of St. Gabriel’s high school volleyball teams. The only game saw the senior varsity girls beat St. Tim’s 3-1 to remain in second place in the league; four points back of Bishop McNally. The JV girls currently find themselves in fifth place in their league, but are only four points out of first. They both resume action this week against Queen E. Meanwhile both boys’ teams also had the week off of league play. The SV boys have struggled this year and will likely find themselves [...]

Have your say – Town office news for week of Sept 27

Have You Had Your Say …on what public facilities you want in Chestermere? The Town is moving into new territory – planning for future public facilities and amenities. Many may not know that this is a new activity, as a lot of people assume that the Rec Centre is owned and operated by the Town. However, this isn’t the case. The Rec Centre was built before the Town was even incorporated, on what was then Municipal District of Rocky View (now Rocky View County) land. The town has, in the ensuing years, developed around the Rec Centre, leaving it uniquely [...]

CHESTERMERE – Emily Khoo is an energetic 10 year old that has high aspirations of becoming a superstar singer, dancer, piano player and beauty queen. This is probably not too different from many other 10 year olds except Emily has already had a great start in pursuing her future career. Emily competed in the Patti Falconer “Little Miss Calgary 2012 Show” in Chestermere last year and was the first runner up. She also was involved with the Young Canadians Junior Singers at the Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show this year for the entire ten day event. For a 10 year old [...]

Life Is Too Short To Drink Bad Wine

If there’s one thing your intrepid liquor reporter can be called in February, it would be predictable. That’s right gentle reader, February marks the first wine festival of the year, and your humble narrator was there sampling the wares until closing time. It was like Xmas for tipplers! The month of January is like a bleak and alcohol-free desert as the liquor industry recovers from a month-long hangover after New Year’s Eve, so I’m always ready and raring to go when the first wine festival of the year rolls around. This year’s event was a particularly momentous occasion, as 2012 [...]

CRCA to host Go Girl for another year

CHESTERMERE – The CRCA is once again hosting a fun-filled day of activities for teen girls with the Go Girl program. It will run on Saturday, Nov. 19. This is their fourth year hosting the event, which is open to girls aged 11 to 17. Program coordinator Vicki Klinger said that the program is a good way to get young community members to come together and experience physical activity in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. “It’s an opportunity for girls to see what’s available to them in their community, while getting active at the same time,” she said. Multiple instructors [...]
