In this springtime of rainy days, how great it was to see the sunshine last Saturday June 1st . It is great to get out in the garden but—also great to just sit outside, relax, visit with friends and enjoy an M & M hamburger for a good cause! As you can see a number of participants did just that and by the looks of volunteers Elaine Peake, Bruce McAllister, and fire fighters from Station #39. Likely discussing more serious things than BBQ sauce! Appreciation goes to the hundreds of people who stopped in for a bite to eat, for [...]

When I finished working full time about 6 years ago, I was at a loss of what to do with the extra time on my hands. Hadn’t really thought about it prior to the first day I was home alone. A few weeks later; after cleaning all the corners, matching my husband’s long lost socks, cleaning the garage, and ready for Christmas by Thanksgiving, I started to feel a gap in my life. Having always wanted to do volunteer work, but never having the time, I did some research and ended up volunteering at our local food bank. I can [...]

For me it was my wife, Chestermere Fire and Rescue, Calgary EMS and a team of doctors at Foothills Cardio Department.
Monday May 27th at about 6:15 am, I grabbed a glass of milk from the fridge and walked to the kitchen table to fall flat on my face breaking a front tooth and damaging other teeth. I hit my head, knee and nose awakening my wife and kids on impact from the huge noise. In the next few seconds of my wife coming to my side, my ears, lips, and face were starting to turn blue and I was in [...]

Being near a body of water with it’s of myriad wildlife and view of the mountains inspires the creative to express themselves through art. Ever has it been thus. Since the early days of Chestermere Lake when it was called Reservoir #1, the lake drew people to paint, sketch and photograph its shining waters and immence curving prairie skies. This black and white photo of a 1913 oil painting by Alva(Alvin) H Buck depicts a scene on the NE shore, the Chestermere Store, and existing buildings at that time. According to Henderson Directory 1913-1914, Mr. A H Buck ( assuming [...]

YES!! Chestermere has (and needs) a food bank, which has been in operation for almost seven years. Six of the current 16 dedicated volunteers are celebrating their 5 and 7 year anniversaries. Since inception we have seen an 800% increase in usage with the numbers growing each year. In 2012 alone, we assisted well over 500 people with much needed nourishment. With this growth in demand, we will be forced to re-locate in the very near future so that we can serve our community in a much more efficient manner. On those occasions where we have excess inventory, our volunteers [...]

The Novel Book Club met on Thursday, May 16 to discuss the book Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. This is a first person true account of the May 10-11, 1996 Mount Everest events where 8 people died on the mountain. Krakauer, a journalist, was sent by Outside Magazine on assignment to report on the commercialization of climbing Everest. Some climbers have derided guided Everest expeditions as “yak routes,” with clients paying up to $65,000 to be almost guaranteed to summit – aided by guides and Sherpa to do all the work. Krakauer signed on with experienced climber Rob Hall’s [...]

It is pleasantly surprising that there are still some old wooden signs around town, peeking out from trees, innocently sitting at corners, or lovingly kept up as part of local history, gently reminding us of how things change without us really noticing. The Camp and Water Park ( Surf City) was a great source of fun for kids back in the 80s with its giant water tap hanging in the sky to fool the kids that this really was where the water came from. It’s life was short ( one season) and only the sign and the little booth to [...]
