ROSEBUD – The latest production at the Rosebud Theatre, “Queen Milli of Galt”, took to the stage on Sept. 9. Since then, it has become a fan favorite. Members of Rosebud Theatre have said that audience feedback has been very positive because it is a feel good play has just the right mix of laughs, tears and love to make it a truly memorable experience for the entire family. The Rosebud Theatre’s Facebook page shows audience feedback: “Queen Milli is an amazing play! We laughed until it hurt. The actors were all absolutely fabulous. At one point I turned to [...]

Queen Milli lights up the stage in Rosebud

Steve Waldschmidt, Karl Sine, Marie Russell, Heather Pattengale and Alysa van Haastert all delivered humorous performance in Rosebud Theatre's latest romatic comedy, "Queen Milli of Galt."

Posted on 13 September 2011

Opening night of any performance at the Rosebud Theatre is arguably a different experience than any other night. Sure, the cast may have the typical jitters and the crew behind the scenes might be worried about getting everything right, but the real difference is the atmosphere in the crowd. On opening night, all of the important people – us media types excluded, of course – are in the audience. Friends and family of the cast, fellow Rosebud students, as well as the key people who bring the play to the stage, make up the majority of the crowd. So, the [...]

Shady Business

Posted on 06 September 2011

Stage West’s newest play, Shady Business has just opened and will run until October 30th, 2011. This play requires that the audience pay close attention – there are some twists and tricks this time! Scott Valentine is the guest star (maybe you remember the television show Family Ties?) accompanied by returning actors Sheldon Bergstrom and David Leyshon. The stage is set: Sunday morning in the apartment of Mandy, a nightclub dancer. Mandy works for mob boss Big Mack, (Scott Valentine) who, it seems, also pays her bills. The previous evening, she met someone special at the club and he has [...]

A “likely” true story of romance

ROSEBUD – When the young, handsome Prince of Wales visits Galt, Ontario at the end of the Great War in the fall of 1919, the whole town is excited to meet him. Bored with the pomp and circumstance, he slips away from his official duties and finds a young woman who would rather spend the day working in her garden than in the throngs of people hoping to catch even a glimpse of the king-to-be. Millicent “Milli” Milroy tells him exactly what she thinks about the pomposity of royalty. When the two meet, what begins as mutual disdain for each [...]

Andrew Johns Brings Comedic Twist To Popular Music

Posted on 10 August 2011

CHESTERMERE– There’s usually a sportsman-like hush on the golf course, but Lakeside Greens will likely be echoing with laughter and music when Andrew Johns hits the stage later this month. Johns, an entertainer whose act blends comedy and music, will be performing at Bogey’s Restaurant in the golf course’s clubhouse on Aug. 19 and 20.

”He’s just fantastic,” said Lloyd McBean, golf director at Lakeside Greens. “It’s one of those types of performances where you sit there and you’re absolutely at a loss for words.

”Normally people will see some entertainment and still be carrying on their own conversation, but [...]

Re-invented Passion Play Takes The Stage In Opening

DRUMHELLER– The 2011 Canadian Badlands Passion Play may have pleasantly surprised even its most faithful followers when it opened last weekend. Set in a 30-acre natural badlands canyon bowl that mirrors ancient Israel, the play retells the story of Jesus Christ’s life. It has become an annual summer tradition since first opening in 1994. However, Barrett Hileman, the play’s co-director, said this year’s version features revised story content. The fourth gospel shares a number of episodes in Jesus’ life — such as Lazarus, Jesus washing the Disciples’ feet — that do not appear in the synoptic gospels. Additionally, this year’s [...]

Don’t Hug Me

Posted on 13 July 2011

Last week I found myself back at Stage West for their new production: Don’t Hug Me, written by Phil Olson, music by Paul Olson. To quote the program, it’s a love story with singin’ and stuff, and it is! I was intrigued by the title since I am not a “huggy” person! Set in a remote area of Minnesota in an extremely cold winter, the entire play takes place in the bar owned by Gunner and Clara Johnson. Gunner, we soon learn, has had it with winter and is driven by thoughts of selling the bar and moving to Florida. [...]

ROSEBUD — Author Mark Twain was once quoted as saying, “What would men be without women? Scarce, sir… mighty scare.” Rosebud Theatre’s “The Diary of Adam and Eve” opened to a packed house on July 2. An adaptation of Twain’s work, the play twists the familiar biblical tale, while oozing with the original writer’s wit and satire. Actor Nathan Schmidt, who plays the role of Adam, said his character is much like the modern man who’s trying to take care of business, until “a long-haired creature shows up and throws things out of whack.” “It’s the first love story,” Schmidt [...]

CRCA Music Theatre Group with an emotional show

CRCA Music Theatre Group performs on May 27.

Posted on 08 June 2011

CHESTERMERE — Watching her young students grow up under the bright theatre lights on performance night, local musician and fine arts instructor Candie Schmidt held back tears. A performer by trade, Schmidt’s spent most of her life on stage — through acting, singing or instructing. She’s started passing down her wealth of stage knowledge by being an instructor for the Chestermere Regional Community Association’s music theatre program. The group held a show on May 27 to mark the completion of 12 weeks of hard work and preparation. Although the kids played a variety of different roles, ranging from witches to [...]
