Last Friday the children of the Out of School Care program were in for a special treat coinciding with the Professional Day School holiday prior to the long weekend. Carol Smailes, liaison for the Chestermere Agriculture Society initiated a pilot program for Farm Safety Awareness. A provincial mandate was sent out to all members of the society inviting them to promote safety on the farm. Creative reign was handed over to each group to promote the campaign. Smailes chose to make a fun and informative day for the children of the community’s daily Care program. Although many children from this [...]

It is pleasantly surprising that there are still some old wooden signs around town, peeking out from trees, innocently sitting at corners, or lovingly kept up as part of local history, gently reminding us of how things change without us really noticing. The Camp and Water Park ( Surf City) was a great source of fun for kids back in the 80s with its giant water tap hanging in the sky to fool the kids that this really was where the water came from. It’s life was short ( one season) and only the sign and the little booth to [...]

Peter Pan has been playing in Neverland since 1902 when he was created by Scottish novelist and playwright J.M. Barrie and made an appearance again on the stage at Chestermere Lake Middle School. And for someone who is 101 years old he still looks as boyish as ever. The school’s drama club performed the classic Peter Pan for two dinner theatres and one matinee last week. Over the past months students have been working long and hard to bring the project to fruition under the direction of Mr. Bolze and Mrs. Witte. As always there were many teachers and students [...]

Four words that today’s children will almost never hear are: “Go outside and play.” For children born after 1980, their play worlds are constrained and contained with little direct experience of the natural world. In fact many of today’s kids can tell you all about the Amazon Rainforest because of a school project they did on it. They however are unable to articulate their own experiences with an Alberta forest or the weed lot down the street or poking a stick in a pond. Kids today want to play indoors because that is where the screens are and screens tend [...]

The 2012-2013 athletic year will be over in the next few weeks. This week our rugby and soccer teams will participate in playoffs, while 9 of our track athletes are preparing for zones on May 28th. My apologies to Ria and Alec as I could not access their pictures due to the long weekend. I will include their pictures in next week’s article. TRACK AND FIELD The track and field meet for Rocky View schools was held on Tuesday, May 14 at East Lake Athletic Park in Airdrie. Nine out of our 17 competitors were able to place in the [...]

Volunteer advocates along with organizer extraordinaire Jocelyn Osachuk of the Strathmore RCMP Victims Services Society (SRVSS) were barbequing up a storm of hot dogs in the Safeway Parking lot this past Saturday in hopes of raising both money and especially awareness for their program. This unit serves not only Strathmore but also encompasses all areas to Carseland, Gleichen and Chestermere. In our busy world we often aren’t aware of all the services our community offers so it is the hope of this campaign to let our town know that they are here and just what they are all about. The [...]

This past Saturday, May 11, was a big day for the local Chestermere M&M Meat’s Shop, as well as M&M’s across Canada. It makes the annual M&M Meat Shops Charity Barbeque Day, where for three dollars, anyone can get a burger or a hot dog, and all the proceeds go to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC). The even ran all day long, from 10 in the morning till 4 in the afternoon. The foundation wasn’t all that well known until M&M Meat Shops teamed up with them to raise money and awareness at Charity Barbeque Day. As [...]

A power point presentation introducing Clint Marlachuk brought tears to his eyes as he watched Kiprusoff, Macdonald and Irving saving goal after goal. “Those are my kids” he cried in a heartfelt moment, a reminder that his efforts as Flames Goaltending Coach have paid off. Marlachuk along with his wife Joanie came to the High School on Tuesday, May 7 to give a presentation to the grade 10 students for the National Child and Youth Mental Health Day. He himself suffers from mental illness and is an advocate from the Flames. Each Canadian NHL team has a representative promoting awareness [...]

12 riders representing Sweet Talk Stables of Chestermere competed at the Spruce Meadows May Classic this past week. As evidenced in the pictures, the riders, under the direction of their coaches, Joyce Enders and Hope Enders surpassed all expectations bringing home ribbons and coolers from all divisions entered. All the girls work very hard to achieve this level of success spending numerous hours at the stables not just riding but grooming, maintaining equipment and “mucking” out stalls. As stated by head coach Joyce Enders, “these girls work very hard to compete at these events and deserve every ribbon they win”. [...]
