JV BOYS TAKE ON STAMPEDERS Chestermere High School was pleased to host the Stampeders Football team this past Thursday. Our JV team took on the Stamps team in an exhibition basketball game. The game included present and past stars of the Calgary Stamps. Current Stampeders included Jon Cornish and Juwan Simpson, and former Cochrane Cobra, Rob Cote. Past alumni included Pee Wee Smith and Marvin Pope. The game was a great success for both squads with a big crowd in attendance. CHESTERMERE – A baseball player from Chestermere will be heading over the border come September, as he was recently offered a full academic and athletic scholarship to Parkland Junior College in Champaign, Illinois. Ramon Valdez, 17, plays for the the Okotoks Dawgs and attends Holy Trinity Academy. He attended St.Gabriel the Archangel school in Chestermere before transferring to Okotoks in Grade 10. Valdez said that he ended up playing in Okotoks after going out there to get in some extra practice time and being scouted by members of the academy. A hockey season can be full of ups and downs, and nobody knows that better than Mitch McAllister. He’s had his share of experiences on both ends of the spectrum this year, but last weekend you can put one in the positive column. STAMPEDERS SET TO PLAY JV BOYS This Thursday, February 9th the JV Boys’ Basketball team will host the Calgary Stampeders Football team in an exhibition game at Chestermere High School. Game time is at 7:00. Come out and see some of the Stampeders’ stars in action. It should be an exciting night of basketball. Semester 1 exams are done and the basketball teams and curling teams will be back in high gear preparing for a busy February. CURLING The curling team has been hard at work the past two months preparing for their upcoming Rocky View Championship. This week the team will conduct their qualifying bonspiel on Tuesday and Saturday. Next week they will participate in the league championship, with a goal of qualifying teams for the South Central Zone Championship. CHESTERMERE – Six members of the Calgary Yacht Club, which is of course based out of Chestermere, are headed overseas this March to compete in the 2012 Laser Masters Worlds in Brisbane, Australia. Four of the members, Lesley and Stephen Reichenfeld, Phil Paxton and Dave Elliot are from Chestermere, with additional CYC members Thom Stubbs, Bill Mulloy and Richard Quinlan also making the journey. It was a great weekend for Lakers’ basketball this past weekend. All three teams that participated in tournaments won their respective championships. This is the first time this has happened in recent memory. Congratulations to all four teams on a great week of basketball winning 11 of 12 games, including league games. From Coach Ozcan: The Chestermere Lakers senior boys basketball team traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii between December 26th and January 5th to compete in the Merv Lopes Holiday Classic, do many team building activities and take in the culture and history of the Aloha state. The goal of the trip was to return a better team than prior to leaving on the trip. The tournament games were eye opening as the different style of game, as a result of rule modifications in Hawaii’s high school system, gave the Lakers a great deal trouble with the Hawaiian teams. CHESTERMERE – The Chestermere Curling Club Junior curling league, which will officially start up for the season on Jan. 8, only has a couple spots left for any youth in the community who might want to learn about the sport. The junior program, which is volunteer-run by longtime curling club member Marla Forth, has seen a spike in numbers over the past couple of seasons. Congratulations to our JV Girls’ and Varsity Boys’ basketball teams. Both teams won their tournaments this weekend and are undefeated on the season. VARSITY BOYS’ BASKETBALL Conmgratulations to the Senior Boys’ basketball team won their second straight tournament, this time at Bert Church High School in Airdrie. The Lakers defeated Lord Beaverbrook from Calgary in their opening game, 106-53. Jasdeep Gill had 29 points and 6 assists while Chris Hendry had 26 points and 18 rebounds.
