CHESTERMERE – With the snow melting and the sun sticking around longer each day, local football enthusiasts are starting to think about the upcoming Chiefs season. However, each year, both the Atom and PeeWee teams usually squeak by with just enough players for a full, committed roster. Our teams put in a great effort this week at the Rocky View Divisional Basketball Championships, winning one gold and one silver medal. JV GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Junior Varsity Girls Basketball Team earned gold at the Rockyview Divisional Championships. They capped off a dream season this week with a win against Bow Valley in the semi-final on Thursday and a hard-fought win over the Bert Church Chargers in the gold medal game on Saturday. CHESTERMERE – The Chestermere Ladies Bonspiel was held from March 1st to March 4 at the Chestermere Recreation Centre. There were 14 eager and enthusiastic teams registered, coming from Chestermere, Airdrie, Calgary and the area surrounding area. Participants said it was a very genial atmosphere for the entirety of the four-day event, which was topped off with a Revenge of the Nerds Jeopardy Challenge. In the end it was the Sylvia Adams team that won the “A” Event, the Marla Forth team that took the “B” Event, with the Debbie Loraas team capturing the “C” Event.

CHESTERMERE – Two 14-year-old Chestermere Lake Middle School students traveled to Edmonton this past month to compete at the Alberta Age Group Trials. The trials were held from February 24 to 27, and featured 13 and 14-year-old athletes in a number of different events. Stephanie Churcher, who swims at the Nose Creek Swim Association, and Shelby Taubert of the Calgary Patriots, were the two local competitive swimmers who attended the event. CHESTERMERE – On Feb. 27, most of the players that will be part of the Hockey Marathon this May hit the ice at the Chestermere Recreation Centre for a four hour, nonstop game. A crew was also on hand to shoot a commercial, which will be online in a few weeks to help promote the event. The marathon game, which has been organized by Chestermere resident Alex Halat, will attempt to break the Guinness record for the longest game, as well as raise funds for the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. JV BOYS TAKE ON STAMPEDERS Chestermere High School was pleased to host the Stampeders Football team this past Thursday. Our JV team took on the Stamps team in an exhibition basketball game. The game included present and past stars of the Calgary Stamps. Current Stampeders included Jon Cornish and Juwan Simpson, and former Cochrane Cobra, Rob Cote. Past alumni included Pee Wee Smith and Marvin Pope. The game was a great success for both squads with a big crowd in attendance. CHESTERMERE – A baseball player from Chestermere will be heading over the border come September, as he was recently offered a full academic and athletic scholarship to Parkland Junior College in Champaign, Illinois. Ramon Valdez, 17, plays for the the Okotoks Dawgs and attends Holy Trinity Academy. He attended St.Gabriel the Archangel school in Chestermere before transferring to Okotoks in Grade 10. Valdez said that he ended up playing in Okotoks after going out there to get in some extra practice time and being scouted by members of the academy. A hockey season can be full of ups and downs, and nobody knows that better than Mitch McAllister. STAMPEDERS SET TO PLAY JV BOYS This Thursday, February 9th the JV Boys’ Basketball team will host the Calgary Stampeders Football team in an exhibition game at Chestermere High School. Game time is at 7:00. Come out and see some of the Stampeders’ stars in action. It should be an exciting night of basketball. Semester 1 exams are done and the basketball teams and curling teams will be back in high gear preparing for a busy February. CURLING The curling team has been hard at work the past two months preparing for their upcoming Rocky View Championship. This week the team will conduct their qualifying bonspiel on Tuesday and Saturday. Next week they will participate in the league championship, with a goal of qualifying teams for the South Central Zone Championship.
