SLATER, Gordon

September 17, 1931 – October 19, 2009 (78 years)
He was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan and received his education in Kinistino, and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Gordon passed away peacefully and will be greatly mourned by his wife and best friend Joan. He is survived by his daughters; Sherry (Albert) VanRoodselaar, Cindy (Pat) Boser, Wendy Slater, Diane (Harvey) Pries, Tracey (Clair) Cowan. His grandchildren surviving him are; Josh Bruinsma, Charmaine Bruinsma, Jason Slater, Katrina (Alex) Kaufman, Kevin Cowan, and many nieces and nephews. Gordon is also survived by his brother Donald (Pat) Slater and sisters; Karen Ringrose and Shirley McDonell, all of Victoria and sister-in-law Wilma Slater of Duncan. He was predeceased by his parents Allen Slater and Thelma Frank. Gordon lost his big brother and mentor Jim Slater in 1995. Gordon was a member of The Calgary Real Estate Board for 35 years. He was also a member if the Calgary Stampede Parade Committee in the 1980’s and half way through the 1990’s. He was the Chairman of the Finance Committee to raise funds to construct the new Chestermere Regional Recreation Complex, and was delighted to be the emcee at the sod Turning Ceremony in November 1980 for the new complex. At Chestermere Lake, Gordon and his wife Joan, Enjoyed snowmobiling in the winter and boating in the summer. Gordon’s favourite hobby was building cedar lawn furniture and every house on the lake had new lawn furniture except Joan’s, but she would occasionally get to keep a set.
Gordon and Joan Retired to Duncan, BC in January 1996 and have enjoyed the many friendships they have encountered. Gordon moved to Sunridge Place in July, 2008 and the family would like to thanks the Sunridge staff for all the loving, professional, and compassionate care they gave to Gordon. A big expression of appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Murray Woods who has diligently looked after Gordon’s many health issues. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the Cowichan Valey Hospice Society, 3122 Gibbins Road, Duncan BC V9L 1G2 in memory of Gordon Slater. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Peters Anglican Church , 5800 Church Road, (off Maple Bay Road) on Saturday November 07, 2009 at 2:00pm.
