CHESTERMERE – On March 27 and 28, the Little League Baseball Canada education program “Teaching for Tomorrow” was held at the Chestermere Recreation Centre. On March 27, a group of 29 enthusiastic people participated in the “Learning the Game” session, which is designed to help coaches introduce the game of baseball to kids aged four to six. CHESTERMERE – The last day to register for another season of Crushers baseball is coming up fast, as the deadline is March 30. The league, which was established last season, had almost 200 kids sign up, so coaches and players are hoping for that many or more again this season. CHESTERMERE – A baseball player from Chestermere will be heading over the border come September, as he was recently offered a full academic and athletic scholarship to Parkland Junior College in Champaign, Illinois. Ramon Valdez, 17, plays for the the Okotoks Dawgs and attends Holy Trinity Academy. He attended St.Gabriel the Archangel school in Chestermere before transferring to Okotoks in Grade 10. Valdez said that he ended up playing in Okotoks after going out there to get in some extra practice time and being scouted by members of the academy. CHESTERMERE — The Chestermere Crushers junior squad started the season with six players who’d rarely picked up a baseball glove before. They finished with an entire team who’d played in a championship game. Despite losing 20-10 to the Bow Ridge Dodgers, the team of 13- and 14-year-old players battled hard in the championship game on June 21. The Crushers’ pitchers struggled to keep up with the hot-hitting Dodgers. The local team gave up the maximum five runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Both Chestermere Junior teams ended their seasons with winning playoff records and one team vying for a League title in their respective division. The Junior 1 team in Tier 3 Playoffs went undefeated in round robin, but lost a close game to Bow Ridge for the Tier 3 Championship. The Junior 2 team in the Tier 2 Playoffs, were 1 win away from advancing to the League final, losing to the Cochrane Dodgers, who ultimately went on to win the title. The Little League baseball season is quickly winding up, with both local Junior teams battling for League championships. Chestermere 1 Crushers went undefeated and won their division in round-robin play, beating both Airdrie clubs and Bow Valley. Chestermere now advances to the Tier 3 Final to play the winner of Bow Ridge or NW Blue Jays. Chestermere 2 Crushers are 2-0 in round robin play, beating both Calgary East and Centennial.
