“What does bofo* mean?” Yes, that might well have been one of the Pub Quiz Questions last Tuesday at ‘Beer for Books, a Chestermere Library fundraiser. And Steve King, the emcee kept the sold out crowd busy for nearly two hours with a selection of both obscure and easy to answer questions. Brains were burning and no cheating with ‘i’ type devices was allowed! Thanks to Bojan Cerovsek at North Tap House for hosting this first of its kind fundraiser for the Town of Chestermere Public Library. The action started after a delicious buffet supper. One hundred and three attendees [...]

These days, who needs libraries? – Really??

In his letter to the editor regarding tax increases, Mr Steve Staples asked the question: “in these days of internet why do libraries even exist?” We exist because every Canadian has the right to access any materials and information that they wish. This right is the foundation of modern democracy, which runs on the simple principle that we are all equal. For us to be equal, we all require equal access to information – after all, information is power. Sometimes this information is accessed in non-fiction form, sometimes it is presented as stories and literature, or music, or movies. Many [...]

Up and Down: An Absurd Fairytale

The Chestermere Public Library’s Novel Book Club met on January 17 to discuss the book “Up and Down” by Terry Fallis. When I call this book an absurd fairytale, I mean it in the nicest way! The novel revolves around Canadian David Stewart, who starts a new job in a global public relations company. He is a little over his head in his new position, and throws out the absurd idea of a Citizen Astronaut contest to renew interest in NASA’s space program. To everyone’s surprise, his idea is accepted by NASA. When the contest winners are drawn, one Canadian [...]

CHESTERMERE – The Christmas spirit was alive and well on this bright sunny Saturday and there was certainly no shortage of entertainment at the Christmas with Dignity celebration on December 15th at the Chestermere Town Hall. When entering the sun filled atrium you were hit with a large Christmas tree, huge sounding orchestra and standing room only of people enjoying the festivities. In the upper level the Chestermere High School Jazz band played a number of tunes and many talented students had a solo performance. These students obviously work hard and practice often, and it shows in their near flawless [...]
