CHESTERMERE – With leftover funding from his Alberta PC Leadership campaign, minister of energy and local PC candidate Ted Morton was able to donate $5,000 to the Chestermere Public Library. Morton presented the cheque to library director Gemma Noon and library board chair Noelle Trung on Friday, March 23. Morton took a tour of the library last month and decided that some of the funding, which all came from donors, would be put to good use by the local library. “The only rule with the surplus money is that you can’t keep it, so we’re giving to a couple different [...]

CHESTERMERE – Due to the hard work and dedication of the Chestermere Public Library’s director, Gemma Noon, the community of Chestermere will host the Black Library Expo this October. The Black Library, which is a division of Games Workshop, is a group that publishes fantasy and science fiction novels that are based on the miniature tabletop wargame, Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000. The Black Library publishes an array of authors, some of who are New York Times best sellers. Eight of these authors will be in Chestermere this October, and it will be the first time they have ever done an [...]

CHESTERMERE – For anyone who is interested in finding out how to find out more about their family history, a new workshop is being held in Chestermere next week. The Chestermere Public Library’s director, Gemma Noon and local Historical Foundation member Audrey McDonald have been instrumental in getting the workshop organized. It will take place on Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Library. “The workshop will basically offer information about where to go and research your relatives, how to apply that information, how to cite it and indicate where the information was found, and all of [...]

Loop Around the Lake has successful third year

CHESTERMERE – If you saw an abundance of runners in Chestermere on the morning of Sept. 18, it wasn’t because a bunch of locals were starting a new fitness regimen. Instead, it was because of the third annual Loop Around the Lake, a charity run that donates all proceeds to the Chestermere Public Library. Organizer Bernard Maillet said that it was another successful year, and that he is continually overwhelmed by the support of everyone in the community, as well as the sponsors, the volunteers and of course the participants. “Wasn’t it a good day? Or was that just me?” [...]

Checking Out What The Community Wants

CHESTERMERE– From now until the end of August, residents are being asked to complete a survey to determine what kind of future services the Chestermere Public Library will offer. Participants are required to identify and rank their top-five priorities based on an 18-item list provided by The Alberta Library. The local library is legally obligated to offer the survey. However, newly appointed ChPL director Gemma Noon said it ties in perfectly with her goal to make Chestermere the model for Canadian libraries. “I don’t want it to be like a lip service type of thing,” Noon said. “I want it [...]

TD Bank Makes Another Deposit To Run Fundraiser

CHESTERMERE– Avid marathoner Bernard Maillet usually aims for low numbers when he’s clocking in on race day. But it’s exactly the opposite when it comes to organizing the Loop Around the Lake, a local fundraising run benefiting the Chestermere Public Library. Maillet, who started the run three years ago, said he’s hoping to raise $100,000 for the library in 10 years. The event has currently raised $18,930 with the help of local establishments and the provincial government. It seems like the Loop’s on the right track, but Maillet — like most competitive racers — said he’s always looking to set the [...]

Library Books New Director From England

CHESTERMERE– Some may think coming halfway across the world to run a small-town Canadian library would be downright mad.

Others know better.

Gemma Noon, Chestermere Public Library’s new director, is now getting settled into her new role after arriving here from England four weeks ago.

Noon said she’s happy to be in a smaller setting where she can get to know regular customers and tailor services to the town’s needs. After managing five libraries in Yorkshire and then working in performance analysis and information, Noon was eager to get back working with people again.

”It was a lot of facts and figures [...]
