CHESTERMERE – It was a tough week for both the Atom and Pee Wee Chiefs teams, as both groups met some tough competition this past week. The Pee Wee’s went up against the team that is arguably their biggest rival of the season, the Mavericks, on Oct. 11. They are the only team that the Chiefs have yet to beat this season. Coach Kelsey Johnson said that the Chiefs came out with a spirited effort, with the ferocious defense only allowing two big plays – both to the outside – in the first half. The offense moved the ball well [...]

CHESTERMERE – It took the dream of one longtime teacher and a lot of fundraising to make the lights on the football field a reality at Chestermere High. However, all of the hard work paid off, as the field was lit up for the first ever night game this past Friday, Oct. 14. The home team’s bleachers were filled with football fans who stayed loud and supportive despite the chilly fall weather, and CHS’s marching band came out to support the team, playing a set before kickoff and also entertaining the crowd at halftime. The man with the dream to [...]

CHESTERMERE – The sixth game of the 2011 season saw the Chestermere Pee Wee Chiefs go up against the Airdrie Storm. The Storm defeated the Chiefs back in week two of the season, so the squad had payback on their minds as they hit the field. Coach Kelsey Johnson said that the chiefs put a new wrinkle in their offence by bringing out a passing game in a big way. The first Chief series of the game ended with a chiefs punt, before Airdrie got the ball at the Chief’s 50 yard line. The home team’s defence picked up right [...]

CHESTERMERE – The Chestermere pee wee Chiefs battled hard but couldn’t overcome the push from the Airdrie Storm during their second game of the season on Sept. 6. Dylan Wood scored on a one-yard quarterback plunge behind the hard blocking of Ayla O’Brien and Carter Johnson, with James Borecki taking a handoff and scampering 65 yards to score the Chiefs final touchdown. “The kids played hard but turned the ball over three times inside the Storm 25-yard line,” said coach Kelsey Johnson. “Our offense drove the ball really well, but the turnovers cost us.” Johnson added, “We also had a [...]

CHESTERMERE– Last December, coach Kelsey Johnson challenged parents to revive the peewee football program that was on hiatus due to disinterest. It worked. The peewee program registered 38 players by mid-February — three times more than in 2010 when the program was forced to fold. Johnson called it a phenomenal accomplishment, but said there’s now a need to get younger players in to fill their cleats. Atom registration has dipped for the third consecutive year. After 25 players signed up in 2009 and 21 in 2010, only 15 have agreed to play this year. Johnson said he’d like to get [...]
