Our spring sports season at St Gabriel is well under way, with Badminton just finishing, Track and Field just starting, and Boys Soccer ongoing. Silver medalist Rachel Patzer BADMINTON Congratulations are in order for all the students who participated in High School Badminton. We had more than 25 students practicing with the team. Three teams chose to participate in the Crescent Heights Invitational during our Easter Break. This was a two day event involving 16 schools and over 300 athletes. On Wednesday, April 25th, St. Gabriel the Archangel grade 9 students were fortunate to attend and participate in the Foothills Hospital’s “PARTY Program”. The acronym stands for: Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth. It is a program designed to teach teens about the consequences of making bad decisions and poor life choices. It starts out with a visit to the Intensive Care Unit, or Emergency Room, followed by various videos and PSA’s being shown to the students. Afterwards was lunch! The month of November marks the end of a very successful 2011 fall athletic season for SGA and the beginning of the 2012 athletic season. The fall sports of cross country, volleyball and soccer provided our student athletes the opportunity to share their skills and abilities. All have represented, and will continue to represent our community in a positive and successful manner. Charity fundraising is a fairly ordinary occurrence in today’s classrooms, but recently something rather extraordinary took place at a local Chestermere school. Two weeks ago, St. Gabriel the Archangel took part in a district wide, one week fundraising initiative for Africa. Many African countries have been absolutely devastated by drought, famine, disease and war, and countless organizations have made it a priority to provide whatever help they can. St. Gabriel The Archangel School started off their year with an awesome welcome back BBQ this past Thursday. Staff, parents and students were treated to hamburgers, chips, and cake at the welcome back BBQ. All staff, parents, and students were invited, making the attendance very high. Jugo Juice was present as well, offering awesome Mini Mango or Sipping Strawberry Smoothies for drinks. St. Gabriel the Archangel students participated in their first annual floor hockey competition after school this past Friday, May 27th. The grade 7 leadership students were the main organizers and were split up into several different committees for planning and organizing this awesome event. This is the 1st annual “SGA Cup” and there will hopefully be many more to come. When it comes to super fun events at St. Gabriel the Archangel School, the leadership students are making it happen. It is composed of students in grades 7-9, who are learning about leadership styles, keys to success, and how to plan and execute exciting events such as backwards day, dances, and various spirit days.
