    * Remembrance Day Hangar MusemRemembrance Day Hangar Musem

    Time: 10:40 am

Lest We Forget The Hangar Flight Museum will be hosting a Remembrance Day Service, to honour the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for Canada since Confederation. 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge, a pivotal First World War battle. Between April 9 – 12, 1917, Canadian soldiers and airmen from all parts of Canada came together to take the prominent high ground of Vimy Ridge. The battle was considered a ‘symbol of an awakening Canadian Nation’. The Museum is honoured to have Flight Lieutenant, RCAF (Ret.) Jack Hilton, who flew Hawker Typhoon aircraft with both the Canadian and British Air Force during World War ll, in attendance at this year’s Service. Born in April 1919 F/L Jack Hilton enlisted into the Air Force in 1939 at the age of 19. Stationed in England and Europe with 438 Squadron, F/L Jack Hilton was awarded the Medal of Friendship Belgium and Legion of Honour France for his service. In attendance at the Service will be Anne Lindsay-MacLeod, Executive Director of the Hangar Flight Museum (Master of Ceremonies), Honorary Colonel (Emeritus) John Melbourne CD, Lt. Col. (Ret’d) Deanna Manson and Reverend Rosemary Bishop. Youth from the 88 Lynx Airdrie Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron under the direction of Officer Darlene Williams-Kruk will be participating as Colour Party, Honour Guard and Vigil. Entr’ACT (Chorus Foundation of Performing Arts) under the direction of Nick Turnbull, will be performing at the Service. This year’s Service will be held outdoors with seating being limited and we ask that those requiring chairs to please arrive early. After the Service the public may lay their poppies at the BCATP/RCAF Women’s Division Cairn in front of the Museum, or at the Memorial Wall where, etched in glass, the names of Albertans in the RCAF who perished in the Second World War are honoured. The Hangar Flight Museum will be open to the public after the Service with admission by donation. Food donations for the Veteran’s Food Bank will also be accepted. Local author Graham MacLachlan will be at the Museum during the morning of Remembrance Day to sign copies of his new book “J.P. Bickell: The Life, the Leafs and the Legacy”. Bickell was one of Canada’s most successful industrialists and had a hand in building some of the most recognized Canadian institutions including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Famous Players and A.V. Roe and Co Ltd, the aviation company responsible for the Avro Lancaster and Avro Arrow. There will be free parking at the Museum and at adjacent parking lots around the Museum.
