In a move that signals a strong emphasis on local governance in Alberta’s education system, Shali Baziuk of Rocky View Schools has been formally acclaimed as the next president of the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) at its Fall General Meeting on November 17.
Baziuk, who serves as Ward 1 Trustee for Rocky View Schools (RVS), steps into the presidential role after four years as vice-president of the Association.
Her incoming presidency covers a two-year term during which the ASBA represents all public, Catholic and French-language school boards across Alberta.
“I am grateful and honoured by the trust and support the ASBA membership has placed in me,” Baziuk said in a statement. “As president, I will be unwavering in defending local board autonomy and resolute in advocating for Alberta’s locally governed, publicly funded education system.”
The Board of Trustees at RVS, with Board Chair Fiona Gilbert speaking on behalf of the group, extended their congratulations to Baziuk. “During her time as vice-president, Shali has demonstrated exceptional leadership, a collaborative approach and an unwavering commitment to elevating the voices of trustees across Alberta,” Gilbert said. “We are confident that her work with ASBA will continue to strengthen governance across the province and support improved success for students.”
Baziuk’s elevation to the role comes with a strong background: elected in 2017 and now serving her third term as RVS trustee, she holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science/Law, a Public Relations diploma and a Six Sigma Green Belt. Before her trusteeship, she chaired a school council and worked for two decades in regional operations and training.
For the ASBA, her presidency arrives at a pivotal time. Founded in 1907, the Association is responsible for leadership training, professional development, governance and advocacy representing school boards throughout the province.
Baziuk has already been involved in leading committees and advocacy efforts across ASBA zones, helping enhance the Association’s role in provincial education discussions and building relationships with government decision-makers.
As Baziuk begins her tenure, many eyes will be on how she harnesses her local experience at RVS into broader provincial influence—both in reinforcing the role of trustees and in defending the principle of locally governed public education in Alberta.
