VARSITY BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL WIN GOLD AT ZONES
The Lakers have done it again! On Saturday, the team clinched a berth into the ASAA 3A Provincials by winning the Zone Championship. The boys were undefeated all weekend in both pool play and playoffs. They were tested by a strong Springbank team in pool play, going 3 sets, but eventually winning the match. They also defeated zone host, Holy Trinity Academy, and Highwood from High River. After finishing first in their pool and earning a first round bye, the team faced the Bert Church Chargers in the semi-final, taking them out in two straight sets. The final would see the Lakers face the Cochrane Cobras, who they defeated in the Divisional final two weeks previous. The match was an exciting one as points were evenly matched throughout both sets. The Cobras, however, could not continue to defend against the Lakers powerful offense, and Alex Cook scored the match winning kill with a hard cross court hit that that was too much for Cochrane to handle. The team will now travel to Medicine Hat on Wednesday to represent Chestermere as the South Central Zone Champions at the ASAA 3A Sr. Boys Volleyball Championships. Good luck to the Lakers!! Congratulations to Coach Wood, the team and staff supervisor Mr. Derkatch.

VARSITY GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
The Chestermere Varsity girls volleyball team had a very good season. They won 2 out of their 3 tournaments and placed 2nd in the Divisional finals. The Varsity girls battled hard through some sickness and adversity over the past weekend in their zone championships in Brooks. They ended up losing in the quarter finals to Springbank 15-13 in the 3rd and final set.  We as coaches are very proud of the teams effort and want to congratulate the Varsity girls on a very successful year. Best of luck to all of the seniors going forward with both volleyball and their schooling and look forward to another strong season next year. Thanks to Coach Barber for his efforts and to Mr. Greyson for being the staff supervisor.

BASKETBALL TRYOUTS
JV and Varsity basketball tryouts have concluded and the four teams are set for the start of the season. Coaches of all four teams are excited about the season and confident that they will be competitive in the league and zone.

JV GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The JV Girls are the only team that will open tournament play, this weekend. They will travel to Okotoks to compete in the Holy Trinity Academy, which is always a competitive tournament. The JV girls look to be strong again and will be a very competitive team. Watch for this team to be very exciting and entertaining to watch.

[box] ATHLETE OF THE WEEK-BRAD AVERY
Brad had the difficult task of filling in as libero this past weekend for injured, Keith Davis. Brad stepped up to the challenge with great success! He made numerous game changing digs, and helped the offense get going by passing the ball well. Although Brad is a grade 12 player, this is his first year playing volleyball. He has learned quickly, and has helped the Lakers tremendously wherever needed. Congratulations Brad![/box]
