Our spring sports season at St Gabriel is well under way, with Badminton just finishing, Track and Field just starting, and Boys Soccer ongoing.

Silver medalist Rachel Patzer
BADMINTON
Congratulations are in order for all the students who participated in High School Badminton. We had more than 25 students practicing with the team. Three teams chose to participate in the Crescent Heights Invitational during our Easter Break. This was a two day event involving 16 schools and over 300 athletes. Our three teams represented the school extremely well. Julienne Cancio and Jessee Avery played Intermediate Mixed Doubles and finished fourth out of 14 teams. Anthony Doan and Abraham Hwang also finished fourth out of 14 teams in Senior Boys Doubles. Sam Valadao and Jordan Nguyen participated in Senior Mixed Doubles, and came up against some stiff competition, and as a result did not qualify.

For divisionals, we sent five teams over Juniors, and Seniors. Rachel Patzer placed second in Junior Girls Singles, while Mikayla Semeniuk and Graham Albert represented the school in Junior Mixed Doubles, and Jordan Maisonneuve and Kyle Hoeschen played Junior Boys Doubles. In Senior Mixed Doubles, Anthony Doane and Sam Valadao placed third, and Abraham Hwang and Jordan Nguyen finished second.

In cities we sent three of the five teams that participated in the divisionals. Rachel Patzer made the gold medal match and lost the third game by two points and claimed the silver medal.

Anthony Doan and Sam Valadao continued their excellent play and won the Bronze in Cities Mixed Doubles.
Gold medalists Abraham Hwang and Jordan Nguyen

The Senior Boys Doubles team of Jordan Nguyen and Abraham Hwang went into the cities ranked second, and just got stronger as the tournament progressed. They beat the third place team in three games and earned a place in the gold medal match. They played the number one ranked team and lost the first game to them. With the pressure on, they won two straight, and captured gold for our school.

It should also be noted that Sam Valadao and Anthony Doan were St Gabriel’s nominees for the CSHSAA outstanding female and male badminton players.

SOCCER
Our Senior Boys Soccer Team is currently in fifth place in the CSHSAA South Division Two standings. The team is led by their captain Lucas Sgaggi and grade 12 players Mike Ciupa, Mack Skorpack, Austin Luettecke, Jessee Avery, Dominic Kalesnikoff and Keegan Spence. There are also some key players in grade 10 and 11.

The boys have played three games and competed well in all of them. They have five remaining games so please get out and support Guardian Soccer.
