Chestermere High School Athletics – Track & field starts up

MONDAY, APRIL 15, 2013

Welcome back, after two weeks of not writing a column. As I write this I am looking out my classroom window and wonder if spring will ever arrive. Our spring teams are anxious to get started with their season and we all look forward to nicer weather. History was made, this past weekend, as our boys swept all three singles events at the Divisional Championships.

BADMINTON ATHLETES STRIKE GOLD
Our badminton team had quite a weekend sweeping the boys singles events and earning the silver in Boys’ Doubles.
Coach Massig indicated that he was really proud of the team and that they dug deep and really played well.  This was the best showing, for our badminton team, in many years. Congratulations to Paul Hui, Akshay Aheer and Danny Pham for the gold medals and to Kurt Timmons and Jacob Stewart for the silver medals. Best of luck at zones in two weeks.

RUGBY
Both boys’ and girls’ rugby have been training in the gym, the weight room and outside for the past three weeks. The teams open their season on the road, this Thursday. Both teams will take the bus to Oilfields High School, in Black Diamond to open their South Central Zone season. The girls play at 5 and the boys at 6:15. Our teams do not play at home until Wednesday, May 1. More details and results next week.

BOYS’ SOCCER
The Lakers boys’ soccer team had their tryouts this week and are close to finalizing their team. The boys will continue to train this week in preparation for their league opener in two weeks. The league schedule will be finalized this week and we will give you an update next week. The boys look forward to their first home game so they can model their new uniforms.

TRACK AND FIELD
The first organizational meeting was held last week and practice begins this week. If you missed the meeting please see Mr. Schaller for details on practice schedule. Practices for Track and Field will be beginning this week.  We are looking forward to a strong showing this year with many new athletes.  Coaches for this year are Zach Schaller, Kendra Mogck, and Lori Steenbergen.  We are currently looking for event specialist coaches from the community.  If you are interested in coaching track after school , please e-mail zschaller@rockyview.ab.ca.
