Sports wind down for a few weeks, as students prepare for exams

CURLING
The curling team has been working hard the past few months to prepare for their season. The Rocky View Championship will be held, in Airdrie, on January 31 and February 1. Qualifiers will move on to the South Central Zone Championships February 8-9, with top finishers heading to the ASAA Provincial Championships
JV GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The Junior Varsity Lady Lakers hosted the always-tough Cochrane Cobras in their only regular season match up this past Wednesday night. The girls came out fired up and played tenacous defense in building a 16-6 first quarter lead. Led by point guard Kayla Georgsen and forward Natalie Russell, the team continued their strong play and went into the half time break up by a score of 24- 16. In the third quarter, the Cobras stepped up their intensity and started executing on offense. The Lady Lakers stopped scoring and turned the ball over against the tough Cochrane defense. The girls lost the momentum and went into the fourth quarter trailing 34-33. The two teams battled hard in the final quarter with Cochrane taking a 12 point lead late in the game. The Lady Lakers never gave up hope and fought back to within three points, with 17 seconds left. It was not meant to be on this night and the Chestemere squad lost by a score of 55-52. The team will be off for the two week exam break  before they play in the Bert Church Invitational on February 1-2.

JV BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Chestermere JV Lakers played their fifth league game  on Thursday when they took on the Cobras in Cochrane. The Lakers started out slow and sluggish, giving ip  an early lead that they would end up never getting back  resulting in a  78-63 loss. It was a hard fought loss for the Lakers, getting to within 7 points with 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. The team was led by Jeff Rodehustkors with  25 points and 18 rebounds and Jag Gill with 25 points,  10 rebounds and 8 assists. The JV Lakers still sit atop of their division standings with a 4-1 record. The Lakers are off until they travel to Medicine Hat for a tournament, at the end of the exam period.

VARSITY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The Lady Lakers had a strong outing on Wednesday defeating Cochrane 74-42, keeping their league undefeated season alive. Yasmene Saghir had a monster game with 31 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists. Despite being double-teamed, Aimee Wilson added 21 points 16 rebounds and 6 assists. Rachel Cooke continues to be the team assists leader adding 6 this game. Jordan Brown and Katelyn Dickin had their best game s of the year so that was great to see. The team will be focusing on exams for the next two weeks and will be back on the court at the end of the month, with a trip to the St. Albert Tournament.

VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL
The Lakers took on the Cochrane Cobras in league play last week. A weak defensive effort and poor shooting led to a disappointing 68-60 loss. The Lakers were led by Charnjot Gill with 20 points and Yuvi Hundal with 16. The team is off until the end of the month, for exams, when they travel to Medicine Hat for a tournament.

Charnjot Gill led the Lakers offensively this week with a 20 point performance against Cochrane. Charn has had a solid grade 11 season so far, improving his game everyday. Charn works hard and has a tremendous attitude. He will be crucial to the Lakers’ success down the stretch. [/box]
