The 2012-2013 athletic year will be over in the next few weeks. This week our rugby and soccer teams will participate in playoffs, while 9 of our track athletes are preparing for zones on May 28th. My apologies to Ria and Alec as I could not access their pictures due to the long weekend. I will include their pictures in next week’s article.

TRACK AND FIELD
The track and field meet for Rocky View schools was held on Tuesday, May 14 at East Lake Athletic Park in Airdrie.  Nine out of our 17 competitors were able to place in the top 3 in their events to qualify for zones.  Several athletes were also just out of qualifying, with fourth and fifth place finishes.  Three of Chestermere High School’s athletes qualified for more than one event. Yasmene Saghir qualified for discus, shot put, and javelin. Blake Smith qualified for the 1500 m and 3000 m run, as well as the 4x100m relay race. Nash Erickson also qualified for the 1500m , the 3000m and the 4x100m relay. Also qualifying are Justin Aldoff (discus), Drake Bruney (discus), Amanda Thomsen (javelin), Ria Meston (discus, high jump), Andrew Killoran (relay), Myles Montpetit (relay). We are looking forward to a strong showing at the South Central Zone meet which is taking place Tuesday, May 28th at Foothills Athletic Park in Calgary.

BOYS’ RUGBY
The boys rugby team played a great game, in the rain, against Springbank , this past Thursday.  The first half was scoreless as both teams fough for hard earned ground.   In the second half Wade Zimmerman scored Chestermere’s lone try, while Springbank scored three for a final score of 17 to 5. The boys are to be commended for a vailant effort against a strong Phoenix team. Next week playoffs start. Best of luck boys.

GIRLS’ RUGBY
The girls were in tough this past week against the 1st place Springbank Phoenix. Coach Derkatch indicated that the girls played hard and, despite losing, were the first team to score on the Phoenix, this season. Next week the girls are on the road, to start the playoffs. Best of luck.

BOYS’ SOCCER
Coach Mitschke indicates that he boys soccer team continues to show improvement this season.  The match against Bert Church was exciting and the boys worked well as a team.  Bert Church won by a score of 4-1.  Player of the game goes to our goal keeper Brent Wileman.  Brent made some excellent saves and managed to get an assist on Kris Reimer’s second half goal. The boys also lost to Cochrane, this past Wednesday. The Lakers will be on the road next Tuesday as they will play in the quarter-final playoffs. A win moves them to the semis and a loss end their season. Good luck to the coaches and players.
