CHESTERMERE – You could see it in his eyes during the interview that Alex Sergeev was not only a proud parent but also a very proud coach. Sergeev is in his first year as the skating coach for the Ice Edge Skating Club in Chestermere and has great things to say about some of his students who were able to reach some pretty awesome success in the latest skate competition. They attended the SRO Competition in Medicine Hat recently and walked, or should I say skated, their way with several medals to take home with them.

Below is a summary of the events sent to me by Sonya Gosse, one of the girls’ parents, who is proud of her daughter and for the entire skating team.

We are so pleased of the success of our club’s skaters at the SRO Competition.

First of all welcoming Alex’s daughter Ekaterina (Sergeev) to our club, she started out her day, Saturday, with a 1st place win in her Gold Free skate, then ending the first day of competition with another Gold in her Gold Interpretive program. All families and skaters were there to cheer her on in an amazing skate. Her difficult edges, beautiful flow and presentation put her more than 10 points ahead of her closest competition. She has definitely become a role model for the younger skaters to look up to in the short time she has been with us.

Amanda Grover again with another great competition brought both a silver in her Preliminary Elements and a Gold in her Free Skate. She too was very calm and collected and was there to motivate and cheer on the younger skaters.

Natalie Miller had her first taste of performing her program for the judging panel and did a beautiful job. It must have been very close for her to take the 4th place in that event. She then went on to take the bronze medal in her pre-preliminary elements.

For our Junior Skaters, all of them did a fantastic job and looked great. They were all very nervous and very excited about everything. Saxon Heath took 1st in her flight in Intro, Brenna Gosse tied for 3rd in her flight and Rachael Matthews got 3rd in hers.
Very well done!

The Intro team event went very well; the 4 girls completed their elements very nice and took the silver medal.

Alex did a great job at organizing his time with all the skaters. They were all warmed up in good time and ready to go. We were very happy with his positive remarks and overall enthusiasm.

Just wanted to send out a thank you to Heather’s husband John Miller, who spent both days at the rink taking pictures of everyone!

The overall support from all the families for all of our skaters was great; it made the event that much better just to have everyone there to support each skater.

The season is winding down however there are still several events the Ice Edge Skating Club plan on going to and competing; and perhaps bringing home more hardware around their neck.
The remaining Skate Canada 2012-2013 competitions they plan on attending:
• March 1st to 3rd are the Provincials; 2013 Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut STARSkate Championships in Rocky Mountain House
• March 28 to 30th are the Glencoe Invitational at the Glencoe Club in Calgary
• April 5th to 7th is the Chinook Open in Lethbridge.

And now for something that all of Chestermere can get in on is the Ice Show. This program is already in the planning stages and is set for March 17th at 12:45 to 1:30 at the Chestermere Rec. Centre. Preforming will be kids in all levels of competition (and even some hockey players) as well, some 17 adults showing their talents. You won`t want to miss this!
Admission is FREE (although they may have a donation box) so, if you want to come out for a couple of hours and see our local talented kids perform like the Ice Capades, be sure to mark it into your calendar right now. Who knows, but you may be seeing some of the future great Olympic Stars in the making.

The Ice Edge Skating Club is accepting registrations in a new program for Preschoolers. Kids can register for the program which goes from February 28th to April 17th, 2013. It`s for 2 to 6 year olds and is held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 to 10:30 AM and from 1:30 to 3:00 PM.
Sergeev also mentioned that Ice Edge may also introduce a spring/summer program this year.
