With exams now completed all four basketball teams were in action this past weekend. Our curling team will be in action this week, as they compete in the league championship bonspiel, in Airdrie. Our JV and Varsity Girls’ teams will be hosting the 31st annual Lady Lakers Invitational. 11 teams, in total, will participate in this year’s event. Check our web-site for the tournament schedule

VARSITY BOYS’ BASKETBALL RANKED #1
Congratulations to the Varsity Boys’ basketball team who are currently ranked #1 in the 3A ASAA provincial rankings. The team has worked very hard to earn the #1 spot. Coach Turgeon has indicated that his team is not complacent being named to the top spot and is continuing to work hard. Congratulations to the coaches and players.

CURLING
Best of luck to our lone entry in the Rocky View League Curling Championship, this week. Representing the school are: Clayton Baxter, Dallas Brocklesby, Kaden Clouston, Kevin Wolff and Jarrod Walsh. The boys will participate in the bonspiel, in Airdrie, with a goal of qualifying for zones and then provincials. Results next week.

VARSITY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Congratulations to the Lady Lakers who won their first tournament of the year, this past weekend. The team was solid all weekend in earning the tournament championship at the Oilfields, Black Diamond Tournament. In the first game the girls were able to post a 79-60 victory over a scrappy and hard working Beiseker squad. In the semi-final game the girls continued their strong play with a 68-37 win over St. Joseph, Brooks High School. In the final, the Lady Lakers were matched up with the home town Drillers. The girls were able to dominate, finishing with a 57-23 win, and the tournament championship. All the girls played a great deal and it was a very satisfying team win. Congratulations to Madi Stoye who was selected to the tournament all-star team. Special congratulations to Laura Costello, who was named the Tournament MVP. All team members are to be commended for their fine play, sportsmanship and classy behaviour. This week is a big one for the team. The girls host Springbank on Wednesday, in a league game and then host the 31st annual Lady Lakers Invitational on the weekend.

JV GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The JV Lady Lakers returned to the hardwood after the exam break and had a very successful weekend. A big win over Olds Koinoia on Friday night put the team on the winner’s side of the the draw for Saturday. Brianna Hagedorn and Kaylee Anderson led the way offensively in the 68-57 victory. Host Canmore was the opponent in the semi-final and the team came out and played very tough defensively. Both teams competed hard but in the end the Chestermere girls won 55-41 and were off to the tournament final versus HTA from Okotoks. The championship game lived up to its billing and both teams played tremendous basketball. In a battle that saw the teams exchange the lead 15 times, the Lady Lakers persevered and celebrated an exciting, hard-fought 47-44 victory. Sarah Bouvier, Taylor Sortland, and tournament MVP Danielle Cooke led the way offensively. Coach Howie Leong was proud of how hard the team worked and every player made significant contributions the entire weekend. The team now looks forward to a league game against Springbank on Wednesday and then playing in the 31st annual Lady Laker Invitational on the weekend.

VARSITY BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Varsity Boys travelled to Medicine Hat to compete in the 14 team Super South Shootout as the newly ranked #1 team in 3A basketball. In the first round match up with Foundations for the Future the Lakers offence was clicking on all cylinders ,putting up 72 points in the first half and cruising to a 123-66 victory. Mitch Majoram was named player of the game with a season high 17 points. In the second round the Lakers faced South Central Zone rivals Canmore. The Lakers took a 50-25 lead into halftime. After a pushback from Canmore in the third quarter the Lakers still held on to a 23 point lead heading into the final frame. The Lakers dispatched the #5 ranked Canmore team 86-58. Jeff Rodehutskors was named player of the game with a dominating performance. In the semi-final matchup the Lakers faced Crescent Heights High. The Lakers defensive intensity proved way too much for the Cowboys as the Lakers won 92-57. Rodehutskors led the way with 23 points in only three quarters of play. Charnjot Gill added 20 points and 15 assists in a solid performance. In the final of the tournament the Lakers faced the #7 ranked team in 4A, Medicine Hat High. Humbled by the strong team, the Lakers fell short in a 81-63 loss. Valuable lessons were learned in the loss that the Lakers hope to improve on. Tyis Yellowhorn was named player of the game with 15 points. Jherald Gonzales was a major factor in the Lakers’ success on the weekend. Even though he didn’t score a ton of points his leadership and poise was invaluable. Next week the Lakers host Bert Church in Rockyview League play and then compete in the Redmen Invitational at Western Canada High School on the weekend.

JV BOYS’ BASKETBALL 
The Chestermere JV Lakers played in the Super South Basketball Tournament in Medicine Hat on the weekend. The weekend was a very good learning experience for the team. The team finished with a 2-2 record and ended up finishing 6th out of 16 teams. They started with a win in the first game against the host school, Crescent Heights, 73-67. The team was led by the defensive efforts of Aussim Saghir and Kareem Pires and the offensive leadership of Mark Rodehutskors. In the second game against the Cochrane Cobras, The Lakers came out slow and never gained the lead losing 82-63. Ethan Isbister hit 3 three pointers in the losing cause.. The third game was a close win against the J.R. Robson Marauders, 73- 62. Josiah Guigue led the way with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The final game was against the Crescent Heights Cowboys of Calgary. The final score was 84-54. Mark Rodehutskors  led the Lakers with 21 points. Great experience and basketball was had over the weekend. The Lakers next opponent is a league game at home on Tuesday, February 4th against the Bert Church Chargers. On the weekend the boys travel to Three Hills for an invitational tournament.

CHESTERMERE CHALLENGE CLMS vs LANGDON FEBRUARY 5
This Wednesday we are hosting the Chestermere Challenge, which pits the girls’ middle school teams from Chestermere Lake and Langdon. This will be an extremely competitive game. Two weeks ago Langdon was able to defeat the CLMS team 33-31, and this past Friday Langdon was able to take their first ever League “A” Championship with a hard fought 26-25 victory. Congratulations to both teams on outstanding seasons. Many of these girls play on the same community team and are best of friends. Game time on Wednesday is 4:30. Come out and see the stars of the future. These are some of the outstanding young basketball talent in the province.

COWBOYS FOOTBALL 2014 SAN DIEGO DEPOSITS DUE
The Cowboys Football team is planning on travelling to California in September to play an exhibition game against Crawford High School of San Diego. Anyone interested in receiving the trip flyer please e-mail me. The $100 deposit is due by Friday, February 7. Please drop your cheque off to Coach Utley’s room.
