June 7th was the Seniors Tea in the Chestermere Public Library

June 6th to 12th was all about celebrating our seniors as the 2016 Chestermere Seniors Week was held and the organizers behind this event planned a week like no other.

Workshops on everything from how to deal with dementia, to healthy eating, to how to speak with your pharmacist were discussed. But it wasn’t all serious stuff. There was also pickleball, a cribbage tournament and a slow pitch tournament and much much more.

The week kicked of with a welcome lunch and wrapped up on the Sunday with a seniors picnic in John Peake Park where friends and families came together to celebrate the seniors in their lives.

June 7th was the annual Seniors Tea, which was moved into the Chestermere Public Library this year as opposed to council chambers, which is where it has been held in past years. Beautifully decorated tables made the perfect atmosphere for the seniors to visit with one another while enjoying delicious refreshments and delightful music.

June 11th also held a Seniors Wellness Expo in the MPP room at the Chestermere Recreation Centre where valuable resources were on hand with all sorts of information to help engage and educate the 55+ crowd.

The concept of Seniors Week is to celebrate those members of our community that are 55 years of age and older and our city specifically has some amazing seniors that continue to give back to our community.

Holly Wood, Chairperson of the 2016 Seniors Week Committee states, “Seniors, 55+, make a different in our community every day. From supporting family members and friends to assisting charities and volunteering, seniors are deeply involved in our community and their contributions benefit Chestermere residents of all ages. Seniors are a vital part of our community – they are parents and grandparents, mentors and friends, employers and volunteers. We all know of seniors that are older in age but younger in action”.
