Chestermere resident sentenced to five and a half years

Prison term and fines handed down for crimes including tax evasion and book-making

Chestermere resident, Dung Kien Luong, 53, was sentenced Oct. 25 in a Calgary court to 5 ½ years in prison and to pay a total of $1.5 million in fines.
He had earlier pleaded guilty to a firearms offence, drug trafficking, book-making and tax evasion.
The presiding judge, Justice Paul Jeffrey, also imposed a forfeiture of property including a Lamborghini, Hummer and $140,000 in cash.
A payment schedule for the fines has been set up. If the fines are not paid, Luong will be subject to an additional four years of incarceration.
A defense request was denied that would have delayed some of the payments for two years.
As part of the payments, Luong will also be paying almost $1 million relating to tax evasion.
The court case stems from a 2008 investigation carried out by RCMP Calgary Integrated Proceeds of Crime Unit in partnership with Calgary Police and Revenue Canada.
