Seniors update:

Health

Mental health or wellness has become a trending health concern. Please have a look at Mental Health Resources and programs offered, free of charge, available right here in your own community compiled by the Chestermere and Area Mental Health Coalition in this issue.

There are currently 102 active cases in Chestermere, at the time of print. Vaccines are available at local pharmacies for adults. Children aged 2 – 12 years book in at AHS Clinics or by booking through 811.

Changes to restrictions have begun now as we transition from pandemic to endemic. Please continue to wear masks, wash hands and get boosted within 5 months of your second shot at any Pharmacy.

Our CRPCN Clinic in Rainbow Falls continues to accept new Patients to our Nurse Practitioners. Please call for a Meet and Greet at 587-333-3751 and speak to one of our friendly receptionists. Did you know that when your doctor or nurse practitioner belongs to the PCN, you have access to our team of professional staff: Registered Nurses, Dietician, Diabetic Nurses, Footcare Specialists as well as coverage for a physio appointment if ordered with your doctor or NP? Community – What’s on

• Recently Shannon Fetterly, Manager of the Lakeshore Manor Seniors Residence, presented to the Seniors Coalition, sharing many activities and offerings for all seniors in our community:

• Shannon has been the new manager since June 2021. Lakeshore Manor is an Independent Seniors Residence currently with 8 residents – capacity for 80.  They currently also offer (furnished suites) Respite Rooms and Guest Rooms – for a 3-week period. In addition, they can provide emergency assistance for seniors with abuse issues. They have a recreation program and are looking to offer day programs at no cost. They have a monthly activities calendar on their website and are able to provide lunch for non-residents at a cost of $10.00. They will be looking at providing space for use by community groups from within the City and have already been in contact with the Rotary Club and Chestermere Coalition for Seniors.  Next week they will be offering Residence tours.

• Shannon is very excited to share information about the Residence and can be reached at shannon.fetterly@lakeshoremanor.ca

• Chestermere Coalition for Seniors – There are some changes and new endeavors on the horizon for your Senior’s Coalition: Recently the Senior’s Advisory Committee was terminated by the current council. Many of the members from that Committee have chosen to carry on the important work under the Seniors Coalition umbrella. We are very happy to work alongside these capable hardworking members and value their commitment and expertise in moving forward the recommendations from the Senior’s Taskforce 2020. Welcome new members to the Chestermere Coalition for Seniors and we look forward to supporting and implementing the work in progress.

• We plan to meet virtually on February 16th at 1:30pm.  Please email Leslie Racz if you would like to join in and bring a friend.  We would really enjoy having you. We will be discussing new directions and projects for the upcoming year. This is the community run Seniors Collective Voice, please come and be heard and keep up to date with new and exciting changes for our Seniors AKA Older Adults. Please contact Leslie.racz@crpcn.ca  for updates or enquiries.

Armchair Travel

Armchair Travel is one of the most wonderful ways to look into our fantastic, vast world and learn as much as our hearts desire. We can travel to some of our favorite places without leaving home.  Through videos, pod casts, books, music and numerous other ways, we can go to places we have never seen, or only ever dreamed of. This way of travelling, is a delightful pastime and is good for the imagination and soul. After all, we are curious individuals and have a thirst for knowledge!

Ready? Let’s visit Greece. A country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands, throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas, long hot Summers, picturesque villages, breathtaking landscapes, artefacts and history. Greece is described “as a living museum” and is home to the site of the Ancient Olympic Games Museum, where the first Olympics were held in 776 BC. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple.

Then there is the food! A Mediterranean diet-based cuisine, derived from healthy eating habits and traditions of Greek people. Produce from the land, consists of, legumes, vegetables, olive oil, unrefined cereals, fruits, Greek yogurt, a moderate to high consumption of fish, red wine and herbal teas. If you like affordable, high quality, fresh and healthy food, then you will love what’s on offer in this amazing country. If you feel peckish, here is a quick and easy Greek salad https://thebusybaker.ca/easy-greek-salad/  (Recipe chosen at random)

So, before we go, have your favourite beverage or tipple ready, lets travel and immerse ourselves in everything that Greece as to offer!
