Have you been watching and listening to how the UCP continues to ignore Albertan’s rights? Are you tired of the UCP method “Ready, Fire, Aim” and the blame game of governance which the “welcome to Alberta” campaign is proving out?
Tired of watching this premier talk about federal overreach and not demonstrating what they preach? It’s quite ironic to watch how our UCP government was outraged with the federal government using the notwithstanding clause against the trucker convoy but had no problem with using it against Albertans for lawfully stating nothing but the factual truth of the current school system.
Do you get a sense that this striking pressure is actually the only thing forcing the UCP to really listen and actually do some research into the issue? I watched the minister of education state he “recently” did some looking into how other provinces are set up. After 18 months of negotiations with our teachers, what would you take away from a comment like that? In doing this, he’s now stating it’s not class size but more about complexity. Well then, wouldn’t you think smaller class sizes would reduce complexity as a start?
It’s reported that private schools get 70 per cent funding per student, approximately $461 million which is about five per cent of the total K-12 education budget, which is the highest of any province in Canada, as noted online, along with having a choice on how complex a class will be.
Ask your MLA why other provinces that have private schooling and don’t receive public funding are able to manage that. Our government likes to state that Alberta is Canada’s economic driver; therefore, shouldn’t that mean the most prosperous in funding services?
What message is the UCP government sending to all of those thousands of needed teachers and support staff to even look at a job opportunity in Alberta given the use of the notwithstanding clause, that imposed what seems like a Trumpian style of collective agreement on teachers, which prohibits them from striking until Aug. 31, 2028. As has been reported, there were other democratic ways to continue in respecting Albertans’ rights, but this action appears to demonstrate that Smith’s UCP government doesn’t have time or respect for that. An online search shows 45 UCP MLA’s – including our MLA – voted for the notwithstanding clause in taking away Albertans’ rights. You have a voice – contact our MLA Chantelle de Jonge

Are your rights at risk?
