Chestermere’s 2025 Municipal Census Launches This May

City Encourages All Residents to Participate to Help Unlock Future Funding for Community Services

Chestermere residents are being encouraged to take part in the upcoming 2025 Municipal Census, a vital community effort that directly impacts funding, infrastructure, and future planning.
This year’s census is set to begin in mid-May, with city officials emphasizing how crucial accurate participation is for securing provincial grants tied to population growth. The data collected from the census will play a key role in unlocking funding for recreation programs, public facilities, emergency services, road improvements, and other major capital projects that directly benefit Chestermere residents.
“The municipal census isn’t just a head count—it’s how the City makes sure the community gets the resources and support it needs to grow responsibly and thrive,” said a spokesperson for the City of Chestermere. “Each household that participates adds value to the services we can provide.”
Beginning in mid-May, census enumerators will begin delivering door hangers to every household in Chestermere. These hangers will contain a unique access code that allows residents to complete the census securely and easily online.
The online survey can be accessed through the City’s official website. It takes only a few minutes to complete and will ask basic information such as the number of residents living in the household and their ages. No personal identifiers, such as names, are required to be disclosed.
For those who do not respond online, follow-up calls may be made by trained enumerators to ensure accurate data is collected. All enumerators are bound by confidentiality agreements, and the information collected is used strictly for municipal and provincial planning purposes.
Municipal census data is used by the Government of Alberta to calculate grant funding distributed through programs such as the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) and Family and Community Support Services (FCSS). Many of these programs award funding on a per capita basis, meaning that an undercounted population can result in Chestermere receiving less than its fair share of resources.
In 2021, Chestermere reported a population of just under 24,000 people. With significant residential growth since then—including new subdivisions, multifamily housing, and increased in-migration from surrounding areas—city officials believe the 2025 count could reflect a sizable population increase.
Every additional resident counted helps support new infrastructure, school planning, recreation upgrades, and the city’s ability to advocate for regional transportation and healthcare services.
Digital First, But Accessible to All
In keeping with Alberta’s trend toward digital government services, Chestermere’s 2025 census will be primarily online, which allows for faster processing and more efficient data analysis. However, accommodations are in place for residents who may have difficulty accessing the online platform. Phone-based and in-person options will be made available by request for seniors, individuals without internet access, and others who need assistance.
City officials also confirmed that information about census dates, instructions, and access code support will be published on www.chestermere.ca, shared through social media, and distributed via community newsletters and local news outlets including The Chestermere Anchor and CFTR The Rogue radio.
Although an official census launch date will be confirmed in the coming weeks, preparations are already underway to train enumerators, finalize data security protocols, and coordinate outreach efforts.
Residents are encouraged to keep an eye out for their door hanger beginning in mid-May and to complete the census as soon as possible after receiving their code.
“Participating in the census is one of the easiest ways you can support your city,” said the City’s statement. “It ensures Chestermere’s voice is heard and that we’re prepared for the future.”
