Local Scotiabank to support Movember

Branch hopes to fundraise for prostate cancer this month

CHESTERMERE – Even though only one member of the Chestermere Scotiabank Branch is growing a moustache for the infamous month of “Movember”, the entire team is hoping to raise awareness about prostate cancer this month.

So, they have put together a Calgary Flames themed gift basket that they will be raffling off early next month. The prize is worth $950, and includes tickets to four Flames games, some Flames jerseys and other team merchandise.

Branch Manager Darren McCagherty said that Josh Gillott, their new senior personal banking officer, is the lone “mo” grower at the branch, and that he is officially registered for the cause on ca.movember.com.
“He was our motivation for doing it, because he started it on his own and we decided to support him as best we can,” he said. “We haven’t seen much awareness about Movember in the community, so we decided we would run with it and try and raise both money and awareness.”

McCagherty said that 100 per cent of the proceeds from the raffle will go straight to Prostate Cancer Canada.

“We decided to go with the Flames stuff for the basket because Scotiabank is a huge support of the NHL, but also because prostate cancer obviously affects men and most Canadian guys like hockey,” he said. “So we thought it all tied together well, and we hope it will spark some interest in the community.”

Tickets for the raffle can be purchased at the branch, and cost $10 each or $50 for 10. The branch will also be taking in monetary donations that will be directed to Prostate Cancer Canada as well.

“We’re selling the paper blue ties, so we’ll put everyone’s names on them and pin them up inside on the walls for the month,” he said.

McCageherty said that Movember is a great way to raise awareness, and that are happy to bring any awareness that they can to Chestermere.

“Prostate cancer affects one in seven men, but 90 per cent of prostate cancer cases are curable if they are detected and treated in the early stages,” he said. “So we’re doing what we can to help improves those odds.

“It has affected some of our staff members, a little closer to home than others, so that’s another reason for us getting involved.”

The draw date for the raffle will be on Dec. 5.
