Dropping the puck for a good cause

The Wannabe's shake hands with members of the RCMP/Fire team after the charity hockey matchup

Charity hockey game raises funds for local youngster

CHESTERMERE – A fierce matchup between the Chestermere Wannabe’s mens hockey team versus members of the local RCMP and fire department resulted in some fundraising for a good cause.

The game, which was held on Saturday Jan. 14 as part of the Chestermere Winter Festival, raised $600 to go toward five-year-old Owen, a local boy who was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of cancer back in December.

Marian Gmitter of the Wannabe’s said that they had previously donated $1,000 to Owen’s cause, and decided to also donate that game’s proceeds to him simply because it was for a great cause.

”It’s important that it goes toward someone who needs it, and we knew that giving it to Owen meant that it would be going to someone who could really use it,” Gmitter said. “It was just our way of showing our support, which is what this community is all about.”

Owen’s mom, Charissa, attended the hockey game and accepted the $600 donation, as well as a donated Blackberry Playbook from RBC and Ian Matthews, at the end of the game. She thanked all of the players and everyone in attendance for their support, saying that she couldn’t be more thankful for all of the kind wishes from the community.

The game kicked off at 2:30 p.m. in front of a small but enthusiastic crowd, and although it was obvious both teams brought their competitive edge to the ice, it was more about having fun than winning.
Mid-way through the first period, the game was stopped for a few heats of tricycle races. The winner of each heat generated one goal for their team, which briefly put the RCMP/Fire team up by a goal.

Gmitter said that game was fun to be a part of, and that they are always happy to participate and help out where they can.

“As long as there is still a drive to keep these games going and if everyone is still interested, we will keep coming back and hosting them,” he said. “Hopefully every year we will be able to find someone to donate to who needs it.”

Staff Sgt. Glenn Henry said that the members of the RCMP and fire department all enjoyed being able to participate in the game again this year.

“It’s a way for them to get further involved in the community,” he said. “I’m very pleased with the level of enthusiasm and proud to have so many members who are willing to get out there and be a part of the event.

“The Wannabe’s team are great sports as well, their community involved is unmatched.”

The Wannabe’s were able to hold off the RCMP/Fire squad, maintaining a solid lead for most of the game. They ended up winning 10-6, and were awarded the Chestermere Winterfest “Hockey Classic” trophy.
