Pink Champagne Cupcakes and Grandmother’s Garden

Preserving-our-Skills-event

For the fourth year in a row, on Saturday June 22nd 2013 the Chestermere Ag Society sponsored a full day of fun and creativity for the whole community. The theme was “Preserving Our Skills” and the full house of 5 to 65 year olds did just that. Kate Fielder, pastry chef extraordinaire, led the day by demonstrating her own favourite recipe for cakes–pink champagne! The crew was on their own to beat the sugar and butter as no electric mixers were on hand. It took pure elbow grease to get those ingredients into a fluffy pale yellow as the first step. (Bhupinder Billing won that contest with his big muscles!). Some beating, some baking and then some creamy white chocolate icing topped with Kate’s handmade flowers resulted in delightful little cakes fit for a queen. And speaking of that, Kate did make sweets for Her Royal Highness last time she was in Alberta! How lucky is Chestermere to have Kate here to share her talents. With the knowledge from making the cupcakes the group then moved on to create banana-blueberry loaves that smelled so yummy it was hard to break for lunch and not dive into the morning’s treats.
The afternoon provided another creative experience with Donna Timmermans and Dorothy Longair, Chestermere Whitecappers Members, leading the group in knitting lessons. The result was to be a lovely little dish cloth. Some of them were absolutely perfect–others, well, they would not make good gifts but that is how it is when you learn a new skill! Following Donna and Dorothy came Lakeside Quilters Guild. Susy, Wilma, Alison and Valerie guided the eager students in making by hand, a six sided ‘Grandmother’s Garden’ paper pieced quilt ‘block’ Sometimes called English patchwork, this needs no sewing machine and allows you to take your work with you. If you are interested in quilting, the Guild meets twice a month except summer, contact valerie@pastimesonline.ca
The Chestermere Red Ribbon is now looking forward to a lot more entries in all these categories for the upcoming Red Ribbon Competition, September 13th 14th 2013. Get baking, get stitching, get knitting! See you there!
