Capacity Building, One Food Hamper at a Time

Danielle Fermin, Community Resource Coordinator, Community Services

Working alongside the Chestermere Regional Food Bank has been an integral part in being able to connect to residents who are experiencing difficulty in accessing affordable resources, in particular, food resources. Our local food bank has had tremendous impact on supporting individuals and families who are living in Chestermere and still influences the live of those who have moved away. A single hamper request can cast a blanket of ease, security, and some level of stability for those who need the service. For example, parents become comforted knowing their children will have a meal three times a day for the next thirty days. Households who access the food bank now have an opportunity to re-direct funds towards other essential needs such as: medication, fuel to transport to work, and rent/mortgage bill as they move away from poverty.

Raising awareness about differences, especially about one’s ability to access to basic needs and maintain a healthy quality of living, will coincide with breaking down barriers. Helping our residents strengthen their access to food resources lowers food insecurity and has positive social, physical, and emotional outcomes at an individual and community level. By supporting the Chestermere Regional Food Bank during their upcoming fundraiser will provide many Chestermere and area residents a hand up towards community participation.
