They say it takes a village to raise a child and with Chestermere being the pretty awesome place that it is, I think this statement rings true. National Child Day has been proclaimed across Canada since 1993 to commemorate the United Nations’ adoption of two documents centered on children’s rights: the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1959, and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1989. The “Child Day Act” outlines human rights to which children, under the age of 18, are entitled by law. This Act promotes awareness and teaches children that they have rights, like adults do, under the law.
So, Chestermere Rec Centre and Vicki Klinger, Formative 5 Coalition, and The Kidz First Network Parent Link Centre joined forces and created the ‘Chestermere Preschool Play Day’ that was held Thursday November 20th at the Chestermere Regional Recreation Centre. The free event was gauged towards preschool aged children (3-5) and their families. These community partners believe that there are many reasons to celebrate children, but most of all because children deserve to be recognized as important members of our community.
With the theme of National Child Day 2014 being “It’s Our Right to Play”, organizers provided lots of games, activities and fun for the little guests to participate in. From bouncy houses, to story time, to crafts – there was no shortage of things to do at the event thanks to those that helped out – Discovery Toys, Playtime party rentals, Chestermere Lake Middle School, Mental Health, Focus Tae Kwon Do, Chestermere Public Library, Chestermere Rec Centre, Evolve Learning Centre, Stepping Stones, Discovery Toys, Chestermere Play school, Prince of Peace preschool and Fit kids.
Rachel Lehmann, Program Facilitator with the Town of Chestermere, had this to say about the event “This is our 2nd annual play day in honour of National Child’s Day. The Formative 5 Coalition is a group of community members who have come together in response to the EDI (Early Development Instrument) results, to promote the importance of early childhood development. The purpose of this play day is to provide age appropriate activities that work on 1 of the 5 domains of development; social competence, emotional maturity, language and thinking skills, physical health and wellbeing, and communication skills and general knowledge. We know that 28 % of children (ages 3-5) in Chestermere are experiencing difficulty in at least one or more of the areas listed above. As a result the Formative 5 coalition decided to host this play day to expose and increase the opportunity to develop one of those areas.”
One of the vendor participants, Tanya Woolaver, Excellence Director at Evolve Learning Centre said, “For me, I love to support our community and find fun and creative ways to watch children grow in all the areas of development. I joined childcare to make a difference and these play days give parents a chance to bond and learn about the development of their children. Brings smile to my face.”
