When Chestermere residents, Cory & Kelly Somers bought their brand new house on West Chestermere drive, it looked like it would be the ideal place to call home. The couple previously lived further south down West Chestermere Drive but when it was announced that the new development at West Chestermere Drive and McIvor Terrace was beginning construction, Cory & Kelly jumped at the opportunity to build the home of their dreams.
The couple moved into the new home in March of 2014 and at that time there were no street lights and the couple was told by the developer that when street lights were installed they would be placed in the green space between the walkway and the street.
Once the couple was living in their new home, there was no electricity and they were forced to use a generator for three weeks until power was successfully ran to the home. However, as happy as they were to have their own electricity working, the lights that were soon after installed outside were not so welcomed.
On the Somers standard 40 ft. lot, there are four street lights that are significantly brighter than those in surrounding communities and even just further down West Chestermere Drive it almost gives the look of freeway. The couple has been forced to purchase speciality blinds to help block out the excessive lighting but even that does not fully do the job.
At this stage in the development it is too the late to move the street lights, the couple say they would be satisfied if even just the bulbs were replaced with the more dim ones that are throughout Chestermere in other communities. The Somers will be speaking with the developer to see if they can come to an agreement about this issue.
