Go Girl is an all-day event planned to run at the Chestermere Recreation Centre on Saturday, January 18 from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event was originally planned to be held in November 2013, however had to be cancelled due to a snow storm. Go Girl provides teens an opportunity to participate in a variety of sport, dance, wellness and arts to explore their creativity and build self-esteem in a safe and supportive environment.
This is the sixth year for the event which is coordinated and run by the Chestermere Recreational Community Association in partnership with Mental Health Services and Synergy. It was adopted as a province-wide program by Alberta’s In Motion Network who provide grants to various communities throughout Alberta.
Program Coordinator Vicki Klinger said that the program is an excellent opportunity for young women to come together for fitness and fun while discovering what the community has to offer in terms of programs designed to encourage active lifestyles.
Several volunteers and instructors will run the various activity sessions and there will be everything from Zumba to volleyball to tae-kwon-do and yoga.
Klinger adds that an important component of the event is the Resource Fair that will include information on important topics regarding health and nutrition. As well, representation from some local community groups will be on hand to provide information for the girls on how they can become involved in many sports and other activities that are available within Chestermere.
The organizing committee is excited that Benazir Thaha, the Project Planner for the Town of Chestermere, will be the keynote speaker. She will talk about growing up as a first generation Canadian and some of the challenges she overcame to accomplish her goals.
“We want girls to come out and have some fun with their friends as well as meet other teens and gain new friendships while finding out what is available to them in the community, we have something to offer everyone no matter what their interests are,” says Klinger.
The Go Girl program cost $10.00 and includes lunch and a t-shirt. Registration is available online at www.chestermerecrca.ca or at the Chestermere Rec Center. The online registration deadline is Jan 16th but they will take registrations on the day of the event if there is room. To find out about availability, call Vicki at 403-934-7574.
