On May 31, the MPP Room at the Chestermere Rec Centre was transformed into a colorful art gallery as the Chestermere Fine Art Guild celebrated the talents of many local artists.
The 12th Annual Art Show and Sale titled “Art and Soul 2014” featured the works of 12 member artists as well as four invited guests and was open for public viewing. Although some of the paintings were not for sale, many of them were. From the traditional water colors, pencils and acrylics to the more unique mediums like alcohol ink, the art show had something that would surely catch everyone’s eye.
An original painting by Guild member Peggy Taylor was on showcase as the door prize and was won by Gene Wickens. Wickens was ecstatic to be the lucky winner of the beautiful autumn scene as he is a fan of Taylor’s work and even purchased one of her pieces at the spring show.
The Chestermere Fine Art Guild is a non-profit organization formed in July 2002. It consists of artists interested in promoting individual and community interests in the visual arts and to develop the natural abilities of the members.
The group meets every Thursday afternoon at the Chestermere Rec Centre to get creative although when the weather permits, they enjoy taking their classes outside. They are always looking for more artists to join them, regardless of skill level. “We have such a wonderful group that comes together each week, it is rare to find a group of people that truly enjoy each other’s company as much as we do,” says Sherry Telle, President of the Chestermere Fine Art Guild.
“Our objective is simply to get together for companionship and to paint – we critique each other’s work and help one another other to progress in our talents,” says Telle, who has been doing art all of her life.
The group often has a guest artists come to teach workshops or give demonstrations on various artistic methods. Becoming a member of the Art Guild entitles you to not only show your work in the art shows but you can also attend the demonstrations given by accomplished art instructors.
This talented group of artists do not only share their art locally. Recently, three of the members had paintings displayed at the Federation of Canadian Artists Exhibition in Calgary. “There are so many opportunities for artists to become involved in the larger art community,” says Telle, who goes on to explain that artists within the Calgary area are very lucky to have such a vibrant artsy community to be a part of.
