St. Gabriel Change Makers – “Me to We”

SGA1

St. Gabriel students have proved that they share a goal to improve this world through the shift of thinking from “me” to “we.” The SGA 2013-2014 We Day team created a very touching mini we day presentation delivered to the entire school population. Inspiration for these wonderful students, came from Craig and Marc Keilburger, founders of Free The Children charity. This charity has the aim to educate, engage, and empower youth to become active local and global citizens. Through the recent SGA Mini We Day, the team members were able to achieve just that. Students were fortunate to learn more about how to become agents of change. Several students and adults gave empowering speeches that centred around human dignity, dreaming big, beginning with the end in mind, and mental health awareness. The team has also challenged the staff and students to create change through a coin drive, with hopes of collecting money to help build a school, one brick at a time, in a developing country. Each homeroom is challenged to bring in coins and bills for the purchase of one $20 brick, which is a symbol of the cornerstone of education. Thus far, close to 40+ bricks have been purchased by SGA students. This campaign will run until the end of March. In addition, students had the opportunity to purchase Rafiki Friend Chains for $10. With each Rafiki chain purchased, SGA students were able to empower a child in a developing country with the gift of school supplies, clean water, medical supplies, food, or financial tools. Over 90 Rafiki friend chains were purchased!! The students of St. Gabriel the Archangel school have certainly been inspired to continue their drive to make positive changes in the world around them.
