St. Gabriel the Archangel students WIN the 2014 APEGA Science Olympics

The two St. Gabriel the Archangel Science Olympic teams combined for five awards at the 2014 APEGA Science Olympics Competition, held at the BMO Centre on Sat, Feb 22nd. Out of 31 junior high teams which entered, SGA students finished in first place overall! In addition to the overall championship, the two teams combined for second and third in the Marble Coaster make-ahead event, first place in the Pinocchio Nose mystery event, as well as second place in the Egg Tower contest. Great work by all the students involved!

Team members include: Austin Bercier, Chase Lamoureux, Danny Depina, Jordan Wheaton, Dylan Wood, Harrision Fawcett, Emmanuel Ali and Kevin Phan and Daniel Nguyen.

Science Olympics is an interactive science competition and an interschool event. Students are given a series of applications or problem-solving challenges that demonstrate the fun side of exploring science concepts targeted for Grades 1 through 12. They cover many content areas of scientific study, while learning to work and interact within a group. Students are asked to use their science skills and ideas to develop creative solutions to problems given as a competitive challenge. Events are team focused and follow the Alberta school curriculum.
APEGA sponsors and hosts Science Olympics as an activity to celebrate National Engineering & Geoscience Month. By bringing attention to its professions through a variety of programs and activities, the Association encourages and nurtures an interest in engineering, science, math and technology in students and the general public.
