Grade 4 students, Kailey Swallow & Brooklyn Young, led the assembly in the singing of ‘O Canada’

On November 7th, the students of Rainbow Creek Elementary school took a break from the normal routine of the school day to stop and reflect on Remembrance Day. The students reverently filed into the school gymnasium, adorned with a poppy pinned to their shirts, and quietly took their place in the gym.
Parents and other family members filled the gym and watched as Grade 3 and 4 students read poetry and other readings paying tribute to those that have fought to keep our country safe. A special musical performance by the Grade 4 choir and the very talented Keister Family Fiddlers of the country song ‘Travelling Soldier’ left many attendees wiping away tears as the beautiful message of the song paid a respectful tribute to fallen soldiers.
There were two members of military in attendance as well, but with the recent tragedy in Ottawa where Cpl. Nathan Carillo was shot and killed, they were unable to speak to the media or be photographed. According to one of the members that was at the assembly, the order came down from Ottawa just days before this assembly that members of military need to remain out of photos and not wearing their uniforms in public in efforts to keep a heightened sense of safety since the attack in Ottawa.
For as young as these students are, they did a remarkable job showing their respect and gratitude for those that put their lives in danger to provide the freedoms that we are blessed to have.
