On May 30th, the senior students at Chestermere High School reached the day they’ve been waiting years for–graduation. Kids were ecstatic on the day, and when it was time to put on their caps and gowns, smiles could be seen from ear to ear.

The commencement ceremonies were held at the BMO center, where hundreds of students had the extreme privilege to cross the stage. Friends, family, as well as past and current teachers came to support the graduating class in the celebration of ending such a huge chapter in their lives.

Every year, including this one, the Pomp and Circumstance March as well as O’ Canada is played by the Chestermere High Concert Band, consisting of grade ten and eleven students and directed by Lael Johnston.

Bruce McAllister, Bev Lapeare, and Superintendent of Schools Don Hoium gave heartfelt greetings from the Provincial Government, Board of Trustees, and Rockyview Schools, respectively. Principal Jordan Fenton gave a meaningful speech, and graduating student Sarah Moore gave a tribute to teachers, thanking all that had taught the graduating class more than just the curriculum. Rylea Walker, a student who graduated last year, gave an uplifting speech to encourage students on their journey out into the ‘real world’.

The Valedictorian for this year is Miriam Robak, who gave a speech that addressed the value in hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Her speech, which evoked laughter as well as in-depth thought, captivated the audience and inspired the graduates to continually push their limits.

The day after was the banquet, which was also held at the BMO center. Graduates entered the building dressed in beautiful gowns and suits, and tears of happiness and joy flowed often from on looking family and friends.

For the evening, speeches were made and videos commemorating the past few years at the high school played. The event was emceed by myself as the school’s Deputy Prime Minister as well as Lane Curtis, the student body Prime Minister.

To begin the dance, graduates danced with their parents, then they danced with whomever they chose, and the last dance was reserved for graduates and their dates. The happiness and energy in the room was tangible, and the feeling of being part of such an event with the people you’ve gone to school with for the last 13 years is something indescribable.

After that, the official dance of Grad 2014 commenced, and graduates danced until the late hours of the night. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2014. On behalf of all of the graduates, thank you so much for providing such a wonderful evening. It is greatly appreciated!
