For 11 year old Zane Fletcher, the phrase tiny but mighty is very appropriate. As being the youngest and smallest on his field lacrosse team, Zane is talented way beyond his years. On November 1st & 2nd, Zane along with Dylan Munro (age 13) and Zachery Lucey (12) will be travelling to participate in a two day tournament in Richmond, Virginia called the “Rumble in Virginia”. They were invited to try-out based on their knowledge and skills shown during the regular field lacrosse season which was June to August 2014 and given how impressed the decision makers were, these three stars are headed to Virginia.
When asked what his favorite part of the playing lacrosse is, young Zane said, “I love the energy that it takes to play, the teamwork and partnerships, the pace of the game, the physicality of the game and, because I’m small, I like being fast. ”
For team mate Dylan Munro, he echoed much of what Zane had to say but added, “it’s better than hockey.” Munro has played lacrosse for two years and decided to pursue the sport because “it looked like fun and is really face paced”.
The veteran of the group, Zachary, has made this trip to Virginia before and mom, Dawn said that it was a phenomenal and great learning experience. He has four years of lacrosse under his belt and says that he loves the dedication that this level of competition requires of him.
Aubrey Fletcher, Zane’s mom, was asked why he chose to get into lacrosse, she said, “When he was little he got a mini-stick as a gift and fell in love with the game. He used to run around with my spaghetti strainer yelling “Go Necks GO!”. He has worked with many of the Roughnecks, especially Geoff Snider, since he was 3 1/2 and considers them mentors. He takes his stick everywhere he goes, has started a lacrosse club in his last school and has decided he wants to play for Syracuse University when he finished high school. ”
