Have you ever wondered what it takes to set up a Red Ribbon Event at a Country Fair and if you would like to contribute? Well, for most of you the thought has probably never even crossed your mind but for those who have wondered about it, now is your chance to find out.
Setting up the Red Ribbon Competition in the curling rink of the Chestermere Recreation Centre, in particular, requires many things but the most important is willing volunteers – preferably young ones with strong backs and good attitudes. SYNERGY, if you happen to be reading this, note it for next year – this could be another chance to reach out and help the community. Other things you need are tables of all sizes, red table skirting, white plastic to cover the tables, section markers, balloons, easels, and a lot of hard work.
But, like any hard work, it can be made better and easier with good company and that is what I enjoyed on Thursday night when I arrived at the Recreation Centre to interview some of the volunteers. As it turned out I became one of those volunteers for the next three hours and let me tell you something – it was great! I got a personal, inside perspective on the set up of the competition, got to help my community by volunteering, and I met several wonderful people who I wouldn’t have met if I hadn’t volunteered my services. And a perk of this job is that sometimes one of the other volunteers will bring in a ‘failed’ lemon cake and share it with her companions.
By the time you read this article it will be the week after the Country Fair but take a moment to look back and remember the curling rink hall, splashed in red, fun, and good memories, and admire the work done by the volunteers for your enjoyment and perhaps next year you might even consider signing up. The more the merrier!
